X201 screen options and other notable differences

#1 Post by Nickolai » Sat May 24, 2014 4:37 am

I have recently exchanged my X200 for X200s with 1440*900 screen. Didn't know that such option existed, but it does.

1. What screen options are there for X201? I'm thinking of getting it for myself, to be dock-compatible with my brother, whom I'm handing off X200s to.

2. There is X201s, is there? I know it's hard to find, and X220s is non-existent.

3. What other non-obvious options are there to look for in X201?

Both series have the same screen options.
You can swap the whole lid between X200/X200s and X201/X201s, but not just the LCD.
The machines with 1280x800 have a ridge along the top of the lid's outside, 1440x900 has no ridge, just a plain lid.
(only valid ex factory, someone may have changed screens later).
The X201/X201s have touchpad option, the X200/X200s do not.
The s-models are slightly thinner and lighter than the regular ones.
Motherboards are also interchangeable between them.
But X200 (normal voltage)/X200s (low/ultralow voltage) have an older generation Core 2 Duo CPU, whereas X201/X201s have newer i3/i5/i7 CPU.

Your best bet (for yourself) would be to keep the X201 and move the complete X200s lid onto it.
Give your brother the X200s base with the X201 lid.

You mean, my X200s screen will be better than regular X201(s), because of the higher resolution? I'm not a fan of it, myself, as it looks not that great, IMO, for some reason. I would expect newer models to have better screens. Also, my X200s' lid only opens up 135°, an unpleasant surprise.

I have an X200s with 1440x900 myself.
Mine has the LED-version LCD.
IMHO the higher res screen is much brighter and better than the standard CCFL version.
My X200s (7466-3JU) fully opens 180 degrees.
If yours doesn't, then something is wrong.
You sure your machine is an X200s?
What is the 7-character TYPE of yours?
If xxxx-CTO, what is its PRODUCT ID?

Yes, I have X200s, or so the label on the lid says (though, as you told me, it could as well be exchanged)
The model is 7470-A22, according to the information on the bottom. (I updated my signature, as it was wrong)
CPU, accurding to Linux's /proc/cpuinfo, which shouldn't lie, is
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU L9400 @ 1.86GHz
That sounds fair for X200s.
I got it from a local used ThinkPad dealer.
Mine, too, has LED backlighting, or so the dealer said, but I thought all X200s should have?
At first I thought that extended battery stops the lid from fully opening, but I have a small one, too, and I checked. It's clear that with the hinges the way they are, the lid presses against the base and that prevents it from opening further. Honestly, I thought that's a compromise that designers of X200s have to take, to make it slimmer.

Here it is, fully opened:
NB: the keyboard is a European one, with a large L-shaped "Enter" key, the way I like it. A Finnish one, actually, with Russian stickers attached. It is a keyboard from my previous X200 which I exchanged for this one, but asked the dealer to let me keep my old keyboard. The laptop itself is, supposedly, from the US.

Now, my main hypothesis is that it is a X200s with a lid containing a CCFL screen (maybe that's why I'm not quite a fan of it?). Maybe my dealer swapped it, maybe someone whom he bought it from. CCFL lid is not quite meant for this particular model, being slightly thicker, and thus doesn't fully open. Does it sound plausible?

Just to clarify, you don't think the screens have gotten better between X200 and X201, do you? Are there other screen options besides the resolution?

All WXGA+ screens in X200/X201 series have LED backlight.
WXGA can be either.
And screens are identical between these series.

Check that the LCD bezel along the base is not warped, and fully connected to the lid.
Also check that the keyboard bezel (under the LCD edge) is properly attached to the base.
It's probably not properly inserted into the back of the frame (under the lid) and thus stops the screen from 180 deg.
Show us a picture (as a link, please) as seen from the rear, with the lid closed.
