X201s discharges even when hibernated

#1 Post by atanasoff » Sun Jun 01, 2014 3:55 pm

I have a recently acquired X201s which is typically on battery, due to its go-anywhere size, so it's often hibernated, put away, then taken out some time later.
But.
While hibernated, the battery still discharges. I will have to experiment to determine the exact rate.
It does not do this while shut down.
On older Tpads, hibernate means off with 0 battery drain. This one has a slew of power options, perhaps some of them cause hibernate to not be completely off.

Anyone know what's up with this?

USB on during suspend enabled, but nothing plugged in. That's the default setting.

Do you have any fancy settings to enable wake on LAN from sleep?

I have not set any (those are at the default) and no network cable is connected.
I'm testing it now; hibernated with 100% batt, then unplugged. Will check batt tomorrow am.

Test:
Hibernate while on AC (batt=100%)
Unplug overnight
Resume.
==> Loses 15% in about 12 hours.

So it's consistent. I'm going to try turning off 'always on usb' but I don't think that'll fix it, nothing was plugged in to usb.

I haven't X201, but have some thoughts:
2 things that can drain battery.
"Hybrid sleep" - OS term or and "instant resume" - thinkvantage term. Both of this technologies stores state to disk, but can live some time with ram powered on (draining battery) to achive fast startup like from sleep state. Check them in Power Manage and OS power settings.

That's easy: pull the battery and see if it's really hibernate or something else.

What OS btw?

OS = W7.

Mm, could pull the batt, if its an internal short perhaps. But I doubt that, IIRC it's OK when powered off. I'll give it another shot by powering off completely.

btw, I looked up 'usb selective suspend' default is on, you want it on. It's not about usb on while powered off.

I'll second checking the wake-on LAN settings. Had this problem once with an X300 which was solved by disabling the "wake on Link" in the network adapter's advanced settings (as I recall). Might be worth checking BIOS settings as well. Wish you well, as it was very frustrating for me until solved.

Checked Wake On Lan or similar in device mgr, nope it's not on. Next thing is check the bios, and maybe take the batt out and check that way.
This might be a while.

Could the culprit be the battery itself?

The battery is self-discharging because one of the cells inside is starting to fail?

That's possible, batts do that. Another thing to test ...

For anyone else having this problem:

The power drain while hibernated appears to be caused, in this case, by unused but enabled wake timer authority.
I had no wake timers in use, but merely allowing them to exist /appears/ to have caused this issue.

LenovoPwrMgr | Power Plan (not global) | Advanced | Allow Wake Timers. Change to disabled.

I took a quick look at the BIOS settings, didn't see it there.
