6-cell vs 9-cell questions *PICS*

#1 Post by hyde » Sun Jul 20, 2014 5:49 pm

My 6cell is not healthy anymore, Thinkvantage report says healthy but only %66, and I can totally see that since it drains faster, takes longer to charge, etc.
So while I am at it I am thinking about getting 9 cell instead.

Will 9 cell battery work with the desktop dock? (not the portable dock)
Also if anyone has X220 pictures with 9-cell I would really appreciate it if you can post one.
And is there a reliable place to buy them besides super overpriced lenovo store (they are asking $190 for the battery).

I have bought about 3 or 4 9-cell X220/230 batteries on Amazon. These were Lenovo batteries, and I believe I paid between $75 - 85 each. Some were 29++ for X220, and some were the 44++ battery which works with either. They all work great. I believe it will fit in a dock, I am pretty sure I tried that at one point, but I always use the X220 and X230 undocked; the dock has my W520 in it. The dock will adjust to allow for the larger battery.

This review shows pictures of X220 with the 9-cell:

It will fit in both kinds of dock.

Amazon is indeed a good source:

Thanks for both of your replies, today I just noticed something odd. My fan was spinning very fast, and when I plugged my original charger I am getting "%80 Available, Plugged In, Not Charging"
I don't think I ever had this issue. I can understand if I was using some process intensive application but my task manager is not indicating anything (Except for some reason vlc was running which ended later)

Any my Thinkpad is running really hot. Could this be a problem due to battery or just some internal issue that I need to get addressed under my 3 yrs warranty which is about to expire in August.

I will post this for you guys in case it makes sense to you because I am not familiar with what the numbers should be. My keyboard is also pretty hot on left-hand side, not to mention I cannot touch the bottom at all.

Thanks for the suggestions, Amazon does have good reviews but there are also many sellers. Newegg has one for $80 too, but I will still go with Amazon considering they have awesome return policy, in case I receive something that looks like a knock-off. Just ordered it from Amazon.

OK, I think it might have something to do with my charger at home as well. I just got to office, placed my X220 on the dock and my battery went up to %99.

I bought my 9-cell from that same Amazon link a while back, been loving it so far, lasts 7-8hrs under light to moderate load. My X220 i7 gets the hottest when the battery is charging and while it is in high-performance mode with turbo boost on. Under that scenario, it gets too hot to the touch on the back left side, near the vent. Still functions fine, but I try to reduce the performance slider when it gets like that. I think it is fairly typical for X220s to get that hot.
