Please Help. External Monitor question.

#1 Post by Hegel » Mon Oct 20, 2014 1:59 pm

Hi,

Bought an x220 a few months back after being advised here (well, I got mixed advice really, but I went with it). Since forgot account name. I was massively surprised just how small it was when I got it. Had done tons of research but was still surprised by the actual dimensions and screen size. I guess I had focused on other things. So anyway, I love the machine. Its fast and powerful. No regrets. I did have to get an external monitor though and this is giving me problems.

I am trying to use the VGA out to VGA in on a Fujitsu A17-2A but whatever I do, the image on the external monitor is too small, or too big and kind of 'blurry'. I am able through the graphic card settings to have two different resolutions for the two monitors, which is really cool, and it works, but no matter what I do I cannot get the image on the Fujitsu correct.

Any advice? X220 is i7. Win7.

Thanks

From what I can find the Fujitsu A17-2A appears to have a native resolution of 1280x1024 (SXGA). You should make sure that the external monitor resolution setting in Windows matches that otherwise the screen will be too small or "stretched" in one or both directions. If you still are seeing a blurry image, then I would change the VGA cable and see if that helps. I would also plug that Fujitsu monitor into another computer and see if the image is sharp. If it isn't then the problem exists in the monitor. And if you can, borrow another monitor and see if your X220 can display a cleaner image there.

As for your previous account, PM me and I'll see if I can locate it for you.

Thanks for getting back to me. Will PM you about previous account.

I think the problem is that my resolution choices seem to get to 1280x720 and no further. The screen image is actually pretty sharp.

I would have assumed that Win7 would be able to detect the Fujitsu monitor properly to obtain its capabilities and then the graphics system to adjust to the monitor's native resolution. I guess that brings up the question: Are you extending the desktop or duplicating it? If you are duplicating, then that is probably what is causing your problem. You would be trying to display a widescreen image (on the X220) on a non-widescreen external monitor.

The monitor most likely has an "Auto Adjust" button. Push it.

And hold it for about a second. This should be done while the on-screen display (OSD) menu is OFF.
