X200 boot only when the keyboard is removed

Hi everybody,

My X200 won't to start : I have only the power AC and battery status indicators in green.

When I unplug the keyboard, the X200 starts normally (after doing unplug/plug the the CMOS battery).

Have you any idea about this issue.

Thank you in advance.

Regards.

Welcome to the forum.
How do you start a laptop without a keyboard?
You got it on a docking station?
Otherwise I'd say you probably have a "stuck" power button on your keyboard.

Hi RealBlackStuff,

Thank you for your reply.

I've unplugged the x200 keyboard and I've used an usb keyboard and mouse. Then the laptop starts normally. But when its keyboard is plugged, there is no way to start it.

Regards.

Does that external USB keyboard have a power-button?
If not, how else do you power on that laptop?
Check with your friends if they have any X200 or X201 (any model incl. tablet), and if so, ask to borrow their keyboard.

Hi RealBlackStuff,

Thank you for your quick reply.

No, the USB keyboard has no power-button. The laptop starts automatically when I connect the ac power supply.

Regards.

In that case I'm afraid you have a motherboard problem, somewhere in the power-circuit.
My only advice would be to replace the motherboard, they are cheap enough (at least here in the US).
But maybe someone else can chime in?

Hi RealBlackStuff,

I think also that the issue is related to the power-circuit.

I want to test with an other keyboard before searching for an other motherboard.

Thanks a lot.

I don't know if it's possible to enter BIOS setup without the laptop's keyboard, since you have to press the blue Thinkvantage key first. :O

Not true, just press F1 at boot immediately to go into BIOS.
In all my many years with Thinkpads I have NEVER even pressed the Thinkvantage key!

F1 should still work to access BIOS, as long as the USB keyboard is recognized at boot. And if it is, then turning off the "power on AC" feature may render the system inert going forward. If you can't power up using the laptop's keyboard and there's no power button on the USB keyboard, then that might equal a "dead" system. Without any way to power it up and get back into the BIOS to re-enable the power on AC function....

Hi All,

As I said before, I've unplugged the x200 keyboard and I've used an usb keyboard. Then when I connect the AC power supply, the laptop starts alone.

Regards.

Could you clarify exactly what you mean by "starts normally" ?

Even if your x200 keyboard is unplugged you can use your usb keyboard to get into BIOS by pressing F1.

If you want to change where your computer only powers on from when you plug in the AC

you will need to go to CONFIG or power tab and change the highlighted field to disabled:

Hi crazeazn,

Sorry for my english but what I mean by "starts normally" is that the laptop boot and load windows when the
keyboard is unplugged and the AC power plugged.
With the USB keyboard I can access to the bios and in the power config part I have this :

So you are saying that if you have the x200 keyboard plugged in windows will not boot?

Check the connector pin where you connect the x200 keyboard into the mainboard and make sure there is no dust or gunk on it. If you have isopropyl alcohol you can use that to gently clean the pins.

Your x200 may have a hardware error.
