X201 screen possibilities?

I have an X201 with the 1280x800 screen in it. The LCD broke from impact. Can I replace it with the 1440x900 screen from an X201S without changing anything other than the LCD itself?

The 1440 x 900 LCD requires a completely different lid assembly.
Consult the Hardware Maintenance Manual.

Thinkwiki lists four FRUs for the 1280 x 800 LED panel, but only two have brand/model names:
FRU 42T0709 AUO B121EW09 V.2
FRU 42T0711 LG Philips LP121WX3-TLC1 or LP121WX3-TLA1
FRU 42T0713 and 42T0715 are unknown.
Panelook.com lists the Samsung LTN121AT06-G01, LTN121AT06-L02, and CMO N121IB-L06 as compatible.
To be 100% sure, just get the same panel as the broken one, unless you're unsatisfied with the viewing angles or color output of the old one and are willing to experiment.
An alternative is to change the LCD cable and inverter to the X200 CCFL and grab an IFS/AFFS panel.

I would say I am unsatisfied with the viewing angles of the old one, but I don't want to take any gambles on compatability - are the other ones definitely still just plug and play?

The ones with FRU numbers are from the Thinkwiki.org site. I consider them accurate.
You can also wait for answers from other people, or search the forum for other users' X200/201 LCD replacement experience.

You can buy those panels cheap from reputable sellers in Ebay. I got one for my X201 and it's gorgeous. But as mentioned by axur you need a X200 CCFL cable and inverter...

This is your ThinkPad and your money. You can search for compatible NEW LCD or search for X20xs complete LID assembly with WXGA+. There is some hints for hunting WXGA+ - X20xs can have normal WXGA screens - but look on the back side of lid. WXGA+ haven't top plastic line (all lid made of plastic). WXGA+ haven't WebCam and WWAN antennas - so if this options is mandatory for you WXGA+ is no go.

Another clue as to which LCD an x200s has can be found on the LCD bezel:
WXGA 1280x800 has the Lenovo brand near the right hinge
WXGA+ 1440x900 has the Lenovo brand near the left hinge.
As FryPpy said the left to right seam on the lid is also definitive if you can't see the bezel.
Seam: WXGA
No seam: WXGA+

I have 2 spare screens if you need, a lt121ee08000 (PVA) with the protective glass and a HX121WX1 (IPS) without it. I'm in Fairfax and might to Virginia Beach for springbreak.
The viewing angles are great, and the LED backlight saves battery power (I'm no big fan of CCFLs whose inverters tend to go bad). I don't think you need any special cable with a LED backlight.
The lt121ee08000 is supposed to be the famous "400 nits" screen. It's new, not pulled from a laptop. I just checked the brightness (reads like a macpro 15 2012 so I guess around 300 nits)
I'd have to check the prices and post in the marketplace forum, or just PM me with an offer

I think those are the tablet screens, so I don't think they fit in the non tablet X201. That said, the replacement screen just came in the mail today.

It is not, it is just another normal X201 screen.

Most probably not, it's not one of the original panels used for X201, it's not one of the models used for AFFS mods either...

For an AFFS you need one of these (plus a CCFL cable and inverter):
HV121WX5-100
HV121WX4-110
HV121WX4-120
LTN121AP02
First two are glossy, the other two matte.

Hey, this is me again....
i just have changed the WXGA+, which i have had for a couple of months with AFFS (HV121WX4-120 ), now i have the X201 with I7 and Boy Hydis 1280x800 AFFS....
For the WXGA+.....x201 Board i7-620m, FRU 63Y2066, Bios 1.39/1.14 (org. Lenovo) | Displaycable FRU 44C9919 (43Y9814) | Display LTD121EQ3B
and for the AFFS.....x201 Board i7-620m, FRU 63Y2066, Bios 1.39/1.14 (org. Lenovo) | Displaycable FRU 44C9909 and the Inverter for CCFL.
