[SOLVED] Thinkpad x220 no backlight after screen replacement

#1 Post by alisan » Wed Aug 19, 2015 12:37 pm

Hello,

Today I had the bad idea to compare screen colours between normal lcd panel and IPS one on my x220. I wanted to put back my TFT panel and take some pictures. I suspended the laptop (suspend to ram) then I replaced the IPS with the TFT and took some pictures. Then I suspended the laptop again and I inserted back the IPS screen, except that it does not turn back on. The TFT screen does not turn on as well.

The laptop is still working perfectly, I'm typing these lines using an external monitor.

What might be the problem in your opinion. Maybe doing the replacement I screwed up the LCD cable? Or something on the board could be damaged?

Most likely you blew the back-light fuse on the motherboard.

This fuse could be replaced or I need to replace the motherboard?

If it's indeed the fuse, you can solder a new one piggy-back style on top of the old fuse.

Thanks for your info.

I will try to fix/replaced the fuse, with the help of a friend of mine who's an electronics engineer.

Problem fixed  I have tested with Ohmmeter all the backlight fuses (F1, F2, F6), the broken one is F1.
I have soldered a fuse on top it, and it is perfectly working.

Closed as solved.

PS: I do have pictures of the fuses, but did mange to figure out how to add attachement here:

Upload the picture to an image hosting site then provide a link. This forum has rules regarding maximum image size in kilobytes as well as pixels.

Still, it's rather unwise to swap the LCD like that. IIRC, you can blow a fuse if you remove/install the LCD cable even if the laptop is turned off, as long as the battery or AC adapter is connected.

Which reminds me, I should probably check the fuses on the spare X60s board on my shelf.

I knew about hosting services, but I thought that I had to open an account.

Here is an image of the blown fuse:
