My X201 is overheating and shutting down a lot (again). The last time I replaced the fan I removed the thermal pad (as I thought it was over the wrong chip) and replaced it with just thermal paste, which clearly was the wrong thing to do. I see plenty of vendors on ebay selling the fan, but I have a hard time finding the thermal pad on its own (other than as a complete fan + sink assembly).
If I need to replace the thermal pad on its own, what do I need to order? Where can I get it?

Scroll down, there's lot's of options for thermal pads. Just cut it to size and stick on to apply. In the US there's more options than newegg.ca, there's amazon.com, newegg.com, ncix.com and I'm sure many more. A little more limited in Canada.

Thermal pads? Does anyone know if the x201 series came OOB with thermal pads installed? I ask because the X201 motherboard in my X2001 Frankie only has a thermal paste application (which I applied myself). For the last 7 months now I have noticed the temp fluctuate (according to RealTemp 3.70) around 37-70C depending on performance. I have never experienced any shutdowns. What benefits would a thermal pad offer? Easier application? Just curious is why I ask.

For optimal heat dissipation efficiency, use paste -- unless only pad is permissible/possible. The "advantage" of pad is that there exist applications where paste is not possible or practical.
