Thinkpad x201 power supply and x200 Ultrabase
Thinkpad x201 power supply and x200 Ultrabase
Hi,
New member here so wanted to introduce myself. I am based in Wales within the UK.
I have a specific question related to the 65W power supply I have for my Thinkpad x201. Can this be used with the x200 Ultrabase I have just acquired (awaiting delivery) or would the Ultrabase require a 90 W power supply? Are there any dangers with using a 65 W supply (e.g. excessive heat) and advantages with using a 90 W supply?
I cannot find a definitive answer to this on the forum, or wider web.
Many thanks for your help.

Re: Thinkpad x201 power supply and x200 Ultrabase
Welcome to the forum.
For the X201 itself, using either the 65W or the 90W charger is fine.
65W is a bit smaller and lighter than the 90W.
When also using the Ultrabase, 90W is recommended, but not mandatory, 65W will work fine too.
The 65W can get slightly warmer at times, but still nothing to worry about.
If you plan to use the Ultrabase on a daily base (for its optical drive or 2nd HD/SSD), then go with the 90W.

Hi,
Thanks very much for the reply and the welcome. As I will be using the ultrabase primarily for the optical drive, I guess 90 W is the way to go.
Thanks again.

Re: Thinkpad x201 power supply and x200 Ultrabase
welcome, LesT!
as RBS mentions, the 65W will work just fine.
I have an x200t on an ultrabase and also an x2001 (x201 logic board in an x200 chassis) also on ultrabase. both on 65W and all is well.
but I don't use the optical even though it's there (personal opinion: usb sticks have replaced it in just about every practice) - but if you are going to use it then yeah maybe the 90W is the better option.

Re: Thinkpad x201 power supply and x200 Ultrabase
Thanks for the reply Tarvoke. I thought I would err on the side of caution and pick up a 90 W charger. I managed to find a genuine Lenovo one fairly cheap from a "well known auction site". Awaiting arrival of both the ultrabase and power adapter.
Thanks again.
Thanks again.
