Upgrading X220 to Windows 10 - Base System Device Kernel-PnP driver not installed

I have a X220 4286CTO (now getting old along with me) that came with Intel SSD and i7 cpu, laptop not tablet.

X220 is not officially supported for Windows 10. At first I let MS install the upgrade and things did not work well. I tried running the Lenovo tools and that destroyed it. Lost fingerprint, and generally erratic behavior. I reformatted the C: drive and installed W10 from iso downloaded in April 2016. It now appears to be working OK, including fingerprint scanner.

However, the Device Manager shows that a Base System Device drive failed to install. Further investigation shows this to be about the Kernel level PnP Device Configuration.

Does anyone know what this is about? Could it be the PC card driver - which I don't use currently.

Any suggestions.

I haven't used Windows 10 for any significant amount of time, so I'm assuming that internally it's similar to Win 7.

Go to Device Manager, right-click on the problematic device, then select Properties.
Go to the rightmost tab, then go to the drop-down list, and select "Device instance ID" or similar

The text box below it will change content. Select it, and paste/copy it on your next post on this thread so we can help in identifying what device it is.

It might look something like ACPI\PNP(bunch of numbers and letters) or PCI\VEN_(4-character hex code)&DEV_(another 4-character hex code)&&(then probably a few more here).

Device PCI\VEN_1180&DEV_E823&SUBSYS_21DA17AA&REV_04\4&323529f3&0&00E4 was configured.

Driver Name: null
Class Guid: {00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000}
Driver Date:
Driver Version:
Driver Provider:
Driver Section:
Driver Rank: 0x0
Matching Device Id:
Outranked Drivers:
Device Updated: false
Parent Device: PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1C18&SUBSYS_21DA17AA&REV_B4\3&33fd14ca&0&E4

I saved the event.evtx file but I can't attach it.

That's the Ricoh PCIe SD card reader. I think the X230 uses the same chip, so check if it has a Win10 driver.

From Lenovo support site I see this:

" This Base System Device is a multi-card reader. This device driver for Windows 10 is currently not available from the independent hardware vendor.
Solution:

On the Windows 10 operating system, this multi-card reader (hardware ID: PCI\VEN_1180&DEV_E823) is currently not supported by both Lenovo and the independent hardware vendor. "

This might be out of date but you might need to try to get a driver from Ricoh if they have any.
