cookbl, your images are too wide and stretch the forum even on FHD resolution, so I removed the img tags. Imgur has a way to generate thumbnails of a variety of sizes for every link; feel free to use it.

I tried multiple times on different versions of Linux. This is on a Ubuntu 14 VM, running with gcc 7.5.0.

This might be stupid question but is it safe to start x220 without attaching internal display cable to motherboard/mod first? I'm asking this because I would like to test my soldering after installing mod just to see does laptop even boot. If its fried I can just skip ordering screen

I finally received my screen (LP125WF4-SPB1) from win0win and installed it. First I only had screen power on and backlight controls but after resoldering pins and reseating cables I got picture! Now I'm typing this with my FHD modded X220 which just got 5 years of more lifetime (at least)
I will look at reflashing my coreboot with dadukes version to get rid of ghost screen, but for now I just enjoy these glorious amount of pixels!

I also had problems when compiling dadukes fork. I decided to re-apply FHD patch without VCC3P power mod to recent coreboot master fork and it works for me. I had to enable "Hardware init during option ROM execution" option under payload so I see POST screen on boot (otherwise screen turns on only on OS start).
So here is yet another fork, x220_fhd branch https://github.com/tabasku/coreboot/tree/x220_fhd. See commit 230b475 if you want to apply only changes I made.

And hint before buying BOE NV125FHM-N62 will be appreciated!

Hey everyone,
I've had my ups and down with the nitrocaster FHD installation, and now I'm stuck. I've been able to see the screen working a number of times. First with the power cable soldered onto the motherboard as in the instruction manual, then by shorting J1-F1 after flashing coreboot with daduke's patch. However, I've had trouble with the PTH connections staying put. I've resoldered the board a number of times due to connections breaking due to the stress of removing the eDP or LVDS cables. After some fiddling I felt like I finally had everything well secured, did a final test boot, confirmed the screen the still worked throughout the entire boot process (SeaBIOS -> grub -> Linux), and began reassembling. Once I had the keyboard bezel snapped back in, I thought it would be a good time to test again and... nothing. The screen doesn't even power on anymore. I checked a few things: Plugging the original screen back into the LVDS port works, multimeter continuity test passes on the F1 fuse on the nitrocaster board, continuity test passes on the F1-J1 solder bridge, continuity test passes on the sense wire. Other replies in this thread mention fuses on the motherboard blowing if cables were disconnected while the battery was in. I don't remember the exact order of operations I took the last time I disconnected everything so it's possible that is where I made my big mistake. I haven't been able to find anything showing me where the fuses are located and I'm reluctant to rip off all the black protective layer searching for them. Is it possible for it to be a blown fuse on the motherboard if the original screen still works? Any other ideas for things to check? It was really rewarding to see the FHD screen work for the short while that it did. Definitely learned a lot in the process and would really like to fix this (hopefully) final issue.

Alas I'm also having my struggles with soldering. Coreboot and everything working like a charm. Can somebody please confirm to me that bridging J1 means soldering these two contacts next to 3A / 32V on the left of the nitrocaster board together?

I have this weird phenomenon. Everything used to work (with hard-wired 3.3V power supply, bridging what I believe to be the J1 jumper and patching coreboot with the additional "power on"-patch didn't work). Then under X, the screen was dimmed due to inactivity. Now it *stays* dimmed, but only once X11 is started. I power up the laptop, the display works normally. Then the crypttab password prompt appears, also works normally. Then X11 is turned on, and the backlight is turned off entirely.
After leaving the laptop turned off and without power for a while, it went back to normal operation, although initially the X display was still a bit dimmed and then reset to full brightness.
Is there something I could have done incorrectly to cause this?

2nd edit: OK, I found a good way to resolve my problems after more fiddly on/off issues: I through away the laptop and will pre-order a Purism Librem 13. Never again soldering on a mainboard.
After leaving the laptop turned off and without power for a while, it went back to normal operation, although initially the X display was still a bit dimmed and then reset to full brightness.

I just wanted to install the mod and I'm currently in a situation where I don't know where to continue. I used a rev6 one.
I did a decent job soldering everything, but I get a black screen when connecting the display.

I'm not sure if all 7 solder joints from the holes are soldered properly. Some of them indeed are, because I cannot move the nitrocaster board anymore.
One thing that doesn't get out of my mind. In this howto on figure 15 the solder point of the auxiliary power wire is on the bottom left. In figure 28 the wire is soldered into the middle of the bottom part of the adapter.

I am in a similar situation right now. After unsuccessfully trying to solder the mod to the motherboard, I got frustrated and forgot to remove the battery while fiddling with the original screen. As a result of this, I believe I blew the fuse or fuses for backlight display. I’ve tested with VGA connection and external monitor and everything works fine, confirming my theory that backlight fuse is blown.
Next step I guess is to find where is located the fuse and test for continuity. Based on my research, some people say its F17 and F18, but they are 10A and according to one forum member it should be F3 or/and F4 as they are 0.5A and 1.0A.
Not to mention that my fried tried to remove the bridge solder with a knife and as a result it removed the capacitor where the mods small sense wire was connected.
I don’t know if I should just get a new motherboard (working condition for £50) or for parts and not working for £25 and use it as a donor. Another possibility might be to just find and order the capacitors online which I have no idea from where.

jfyi about the soldering job and testing all the connections. Except the sense wire you can test all soldering joints you made with a multimeter easily.
A second person for helping is recommended. Set your multimeter for testing ohm to check the connection. Use one multimeter cable on the solder joint of the nitrocaster board and the second on the back side of the case inside the docking connector. Test for all 7 solder points if they connecting with the docking port.
To test the power wire just set your multimeter to check for DC Voltage. Power on your device and then put the red multimeter onto the point you soldered onto the nitrocaster board and the second one on a cable connectors ground to close the electronic circuit. It should output a clean 3.3 volt. So you can check if your soldering was correct.
I got mine working finally. My issue is quite embarassing. I just didn't plugged the eDP cable 100% into the monitor. So I resoldered all solder joints just to find out everything had to functional from the start.

You can use any other wires that you have: bare for sense, insulated for power.

When trying to solder the sense wire the capacitor was damaged but pad is still intact. Does anyone know what kind of capacitor it is and where/if I could get a replacement without buying an entire motherboard?

From my emails with nitrocaster I'll give you this very interesting info:
That capacitor is an SCD1U10V2KX (1uF 10V surface mount capacitor)Q: I tried to solder the sense-wire to the 3rd capacitor C137, but I messed up, using a soldering iron that was too hot, which broke the C137.
That C137 capacitor sits between DPD_3N (Left)----[_C137_]----(Right) DOCKB_DP3N
Do I need that capacitor, and if not, where do I solder the sense-wire?
(I have a few spare capacitors, that I removed from a dead X230 mobo).
A: The sense wire has to be soldered to DPD_3N. If you don't use a docking station, you can just not solder C137 back onto the mobo and the adapter board will work fine as long as the sense wire is soldered to its place.

The rest 1% refers to the Black Boot Screen issue so I can not see POST, GRUB etc.
I have checked the DP_SENSE wire is connected to the capacitor, the R3 is 10 kOhm, and the signal is passed to the pin 11 (PC4) of the MCU.
I captured an oscillogram of DP_SENSE_R signal right on the pin (Blue) and AUX Power level (Yellow), see the picture below.
Could you guys advice if it is a correct signal form or not?
My doubts are related to:
1. It is only ~1.1 V
2. It drops down to ~0.5V right after startup until the OS Welcome screen appears.

Just seeing this at the ebay listing says it all:
The word "compatible" in this context means: "what we'll send will work on your laptop, period. No guarantees it will be the screen you wanted."
In other words, they can/will send you an ugly TN screen instead of the IPS one posted in the eBay listing.
IMO it's almost a scam.

I prefer to buy used condition individual LCDs for this reason. This way I see pictures of the true item and the price is on average lower.

Edit: slice batteries work just fine with FHD x230's after isolating a few pins with kapton tape, as per nitrocaster's instructions. Thanks!
P.S.- replacing the slice battery's yellow barrel plug with a USB-C port works just fine w/ a 10kOhm resistor on the ID wire. Neat!

Hi guys, I finally got around to doing this. It was massively fiddly and I had a screen that turned off at random. I resoldered the infamous little PCB that attaches to the dock pins and it seems to work now. The screen is seriously sweet.
I stuck my x230 in my Minidock and there is no longer Displayport out. Please can someone tell me which **external** video connections work on my x230 when it is plugged into the dock? I do not use the x230's built-in LCD when I use the dock.

Hi ips_clone,
Did you read the FAQ in the first post? It explains that dock DP#2 output is used for the mod and how to make DP#1 on the dock functional again by taping certain pins in the connector.
Also, VGA on the dock should work regardless, I believe.

I was running my X230 on an external display preparing and troubleshooting before installing the nitrocaster mod again. I desoldered it before because the FHD display was not working and I planned to redo the solder job. The machine was working fine and booted. I was able to enter Bios with an external display attached to the VGA port.
Before I was trying to use the original Lenovo Display without the mod. One IPS Display that I knew was broken unfortunately did not work but backlight was on and the still intact part was showing grey output. The other one was not broken(?), need to test with another machine. But only showed grey/white output all over the screen. Backlight was on but I did not see the bootscreen or anything else. Then I attached the external display, de-attached the original display and was able to boot normal and check bios etc. At one moment I got the glory idea to see if the old LVDS display maybe works now. Because all was laying open and without display on my table. I was using an external display, keyboard and mouse... was browsing the BIOS at the external screen... and I did not recognize the machine was still running and I plugged my LVDS cable in and now I am [censored]. Even without RAM no beep from the little baby. I can start it, fan is running, but no beeps and no display (internal or external). Even no external display!
How can I bring back my machine?
One odd thing is that without CMOS battery it was working before but now the machine does not start without CMOS battery. When the CMOS is not connected the green light at the start button is glowing for 1sec and that's it. When I use CMOS battery the machine is starting but the fan gets quite noisy after several seconds. Green LED stays on. It seems like the machine is still alive. But where to look? What to do to revive that baby? How can I check the Mobo if some fuse or something is blown?

Download those schematics, on page 36 you'll find F7 FUSE-1D5A6V-10GP.
That's the backlight fuse which will be blown.
You'll need to check any and all other fuses you can find, to see what else you blew.

Hi, I missed that so thanks for pointing it out. I have just done the mod with some tape over the specific pins required using a microscope:

This does not make DP#1 work unfortunately. I am using Linux.
I have an unmodded laptop that still works with DP#1 in case it matters. Any ideas what I am doing wrong? I double checked the pins that I've covered up match the image linked from the FAQ:

Edit: to clarify, I have a different dock to that used in the instructional photo. My dock is 4338 on this page: https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/soluti ... 0-overview
and when I say DP#1 and DP#2 I am referring to the 2 DP ports on the back of the dock.

All backlight fuses are 3A/32V/Fast, usually have a letter P on them, and come in different sizes (most popular 0603), available from the likes of Mouser, Littlefuse, Bourns, Farnell, eBay, etc.
