x200T and Windows 7 update

I've now gathered together 3 X200T machines in a so-far vain attempt to find a combination of drivers that would enable pen and finger touch in Windows 10. Today, to check my sanity, I put W7 on the 3rd machine and checked that pen and touch works on that (it does).

So, I started the update procedure with W7. Nothing happened, so I installed the KB-3172605 and 3020369 unblock-W7-update updates, and the other updates began to flow in. Well over 200 of them.

Right at the end, when all these had stopped, I ran Lenovo System Update and allowed it to update all the drivers, but not the Lenovo stuff like ReachIt, Password manager etc.

I then tried Windows Update again and it failed saying the update service was not running. Checked and it was running. Went online and searched, finding suggestions like stopping the service and deleting all of Windows\SoftwareDistribution or updating the Intel RST driver. Neither of these worked, and the Intel driver checker says the drivers, although old, are the latest.

Has anyone else seen this, or have any magic suggestions to apply?

Thanks for any help.

Follow the suggestions here

http://wu.krelay.de/en/

in the part btw "solutions to the issue" and "monthly update"

Btw, you don't need to disable windows update... just
1) boot
2) don't open windows update (if you do open it, the service hangs when trying to stop it)
3) go to services and stop windows update

Install what the above site mentions.

Hmmm, all the KB's referred to are installed, except for 3177467. This fails when I try to install it.

In the absence of any other of my ideas, I ran sfc /scannow, which says there are corrupt files it cannot repair, but, as far as I can tell, the CBS.log file contains no indication of any error.

I'll carry on tomorrow!

Had this happen a few times with different Thinkpads. Best solution I found was do a fresh install again. Second time through worked everytime. Not a common problem but happens at times.

Yes, I think I'll have to try a fresh install.

sfc /scannow says it found corrupt files, but the CBS log shows everything OK.

A surface scan using HD Tune shows the disk is fine.

I've actually recently had to help friends who have had problems with W7 Update, but got all theirs working. This is embarrassing!

Tried a fresh install, going though the sequence of updates as mentioned above as per http://wu.krelay.de/en/

Then allowed W7 to update until it offered no more pre-ticked updates.

Windows Update still working at this point.

Ran freshly downloaded Lenovo System Update, which immediately said it needed to update itself. Allowed this, and the new version ran, showing
"Windows Requires a Digitally Signed Driver. System Information Detector. SWIX64. xxxxx\tvsuhd64.sys"

Looked the file up in Program Files (x86)\Lenovo\System update and it appears to have a date of 10/December/2016 and says it is digitally signed by Lenovo.

I ignored all this and allowed System Update to run, updating all files as listed in the original post.

Windows Update now not working, reporting that the service was not running (it was).

Went to Device Manager->IDE/ATAPI controllers, rolled back driver from version 8.something (didn't make a note, I'm afraid) to version 6.1.7601.23403

Now Windows Update works again.

Any comments? Should I try to report this to Lenovo as a possible bug, and if so, how?

Did you resolve this error? I've been seeing it since late Dec. Lenovo forums contain nothing.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,

Why does everyone want to install all those updates?
It's a huge waste of time and an even greater source of frustration!
On my desktop I have stopped all W7 updates since May 2016.
Not a single problem.
And on my laptops I never bother with any W7 updates.
Again, not a single problem.

When W7 comes to an end, I will be well prepared to switch over to Linux.

99.99999% aren't a problem. It's the 0.00001%.

I'm afraid that I have not looked at this much since posting, because I've been fighting a similar sort of battle on an X60T that I was trying to prepare for someone.
In that case I was attempting to recover or fresh install Vista, and, after admittedly making some stupid mistakes initially, waded into the quagmire that is Vista Windows Update.

In the end, with Vista, it seemed to come down to installing a set of 5 KB files, which then allowed W Update to run and work, but I gather that the 5 files change every time MS does a Tuesday update. All this is way beyond my understanding, but I do understand enough to think that Microsoft have managed to turn Updating Vista and W7 into an utter mess.

I do run machines here with updates turned off, but where I am trying to prepare machines for others to use and manage, I like t think they are as up to date as possible leaving me.

I do want to get back onto my X200T problems as soon as I can!

I've got a thread going here:

So far no joy.

The hunt continues...
