X230 board compatible with X220?
My sister's X220 is randomly shutting down, and it doesn't seem to be a CPU temperature issue. I'm thinking of replacing the planar board, and was wondering if I can upgrade to an X230 board without needing to modify the bottom case. Are the X220 and X230 boards physically compatible?
I'm also replacing the keyboard BTW.

The X220 has a DisplayPort while the X230 uses a miniDisplayPort. I can't imagine there's much of a practical difference, other than USB 3.0.axur-delmeria wrote:Are the X220 and X230 boards physically compatible?

I see. I can probably MacGyver a port cover for that.ZaZ wrote:The X220 has a DisplayPort while the X230 uses a miniDisplayPort. I can't imagine there's much of a practical difference, other than USB 3.0.
How about the VGA port?
I've been looking at pictures of the X220 and X230 from Notebookcheck.net's review articles, but I can't determine if the VGA port was moved or not. The other ports seem to be in the same place though.

Re: X230 board compatible with X220?
Hi, I registered just to reply. I own a X220 and have the exact same problem. It shuts down randomly. I have done a tremendous amount of trouble shooting but can't figure out what is causing it. If I slap my computer a few times after an unexpected shutdown it doesn't happen again for a few weeks. My theory is that is is caused by something physically shorting out the mobo. The problem sometimes gets worse when used reclined, but then it also happens when on a flat surface. However, shaking it or slapping it on the bottom works. Hope you get it taken care of!

Wow. That's one heck of a percussive maintenance. Seems like something is coming loose inside, or maybe warping due to heat? I've read that some batches had bad EEPROM chips, but I don't know if the problem your X220 and my sister's suffer from is a symptom of that.
Actually my own X220 has its own random quirk, like the screen turning off and the system attempting to go to sleep. If I press the mute button immediately, the system will go back to normal, but if I don't, it will just hang up, needing a power cycle to get it back to normal.
