Hi,
I would like to know if I can hook a HDD caddy or DVDSLIM into the Ultrabase bay that are
not original.
Because I tried both and neither worked [they both don't show up at all]. So either the Ultrabase I purchased has a broken bay

or I need Lenovo original/compatible parts? What do you guys think? Thank you.

Welcome to thinkpads.com!
I don't believe that I've ever seen a non-factory Ultrabase for any of the X series machines. Do you have a link / photo to your unit?

I think he's saying the optical drive/caddy is non-Lenovo, not the Ultrabase itself.

There are some plastic tabs on the original Lenovo parts, which are otherwise just optical drives like any other. You should try getting a original one, and move the plastic parts over. I think one is for keeping the drive locket in the Ultrabay and the other one probably activates a switch to let the machine now something has been inserted into the bay.

Unit is original, at least it looks original. Ports all work excluding the aforementioned bay (?) and the DP, which I haven't tested yet. I even opened it, looks ok.

So you're saying there's something that mechanically tells the ultrabay a unit (dvd/hdd) is inserted, which in my case doesn't trigger because what I have are not Lenovo parts?
In this case I would need either an original or Lenovo compatible HDD caddy if I understand correctly (I would like to avoid buying a dvd, I don't need it). EDIT: mmm I understand I may have to buy an original one and move the plastic parts.
EDIT 2: ok seems like i need this

The drive and/or adapter must have SATA connectors, as in the Lenovo link.
Any other type connectors will prevent you from inserting them all the way.
