19+ slice battery mod

#1 Post by OhYou_ » Mon Apr 17, 2017 3:56 pm

Has anyone ever heard of someone re-celling a slice battery?
I know on the main batteries, it's a annoying process that requires a constant power to the control board so as not to cause a disturbance in the force or something.
Anyone know if its the same for the slices?

My plan is to basically take apart a battery, and cut the bottom out of it, then glue as many 18650 cells as I can afford into it.
Using rough calculations, based on the external dimensions of an x220, I can fit about 36-40 cells single height, for up to a massive 480Wh, using ncr18650b cells.

welcome to the forum..

what type of cells are in there now..? 18650's or something else..?
maybe just raw cells without any controller on each cell..?

Thanks!

I do not have one to tear apart yet, but its definitely too thin for there to be 18650s in there. It's going to be some form of flat cells.
From reading, the normal thinkpad batteries do not have cell level protection.

Oh yes, they do.
You'll need to keep every cell at a certain charge if you want to replace them
You must connect the new cell parallel to the old one, before you remove the old one, otherwise the cell-protection switches the charging circuit off.

I saw a thing about that where someone had to load balance every battery equally and then swap it.
Is there any way to turn the charging circuit back on? or honestly I'll probably just build my own, since the slice has its own charge port anyway.
As long as it still sends power to the laptop.

The 19+ has 6 Li-Polymer cells, no idea what shape or size.
Also no idea how it's done or what is required to do it properly.
Never did it and never will, too dangerous, what with exploding, fire-causing Lithium cells, no thanks.

Check if you have friends in college, they may be able to get it cheaper through their college store.

I've ordered two used slices, when they come in, I'll pull one apart and take pictures.

No one knows in detail about the charging circuit or has a schematic? I've heard that there's a Fuze somewhere that will blow if the Voltage is lost, but rats about it. I may just experiment with using a capacitor to bridge the gap in swapping the cells. Used slices are pretty cheap anyway.

I'm not afraid of a little fire. I've burned down lithium batteries right on my desk at work before.

You'll want to read this if you haven't yet : https://hackaday.io/page/247-replacing- ... -batteries
If you end up tripping the protection you can also try this : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xyeHKKe2z0Q
Someone in the comments confirmed it working with a t420 55+, should work for the 19+.

I'll be interested in pictures when you open it, I removed the screws on mine but the remaining plastic tabs holding it are quite strong and I was afraid of breaking them.
