Which Thinkpad should i pick x220 or x230 ?

#1 Post by Dragg » Sat Jul 01, 2017 6:44 pm

Hello People,

I want to choose on of these two laptops, which one would you personally go:

Code: Select all

Lenovo ThinkPad X220 IPS LCD | i7 2,7 GHz | 8 GB Ram | 320 HDD | Price 290$

or

Lenovo ThinkPad X230 | TN Screen | i7 2,9 GHz | 8 GB Ram | 500 GB HDD | Price 360$
I would love to hear your opinion, I like the extra speed cpu bei x230 and graphic card HD 4000 while in x220 it's HD 3000

the fact i never tried IPS screen on a Lapto before so i'm not sure what i'm missing here but if it's easier and better for my eyes then i would choose the IPS because i read a lot and stare a lot on screen whole day

ABSOLUETLY THE FIRST OPTION. THE OTHER ONE WILL HAVE MINIMALLY BETTER PERFORMANCE. I personally use both daily and I dont notice the processor difference but SCREEN makes a BIG Difference.
Thinkpad4by3's Law of the Universe.

The efficiency of two screens equally sized with equal numbers if pixels are equal. The time spent by a 4:3 user complaining about 16:9 is proportional to the inefficiency working with a 16:9 display, therefore the amount of useful work extracted is equal.

Given the price difference and the configuration, I personally would also take the first one, because IPS makes a world of difference, but there may be other things to consider:
 • i7 model on X220 gives you USB 3.0, but only a single port, and slightly lower-performing than the USB 3.0 on X230
 • X230 supports 3 displays, X220 only supports 2
 • X230 has the new style keyboard which some like and some don't; it is possible to retrofit an X220 keyboard after applying a small firmware mod (flashing the Embedded Controller)
 • On these models replacing the screen is not a difficult task and requires minimal disassembling, so it is always possible to retrofit an IPS screen
Thinkpad 25 (20K7), T490 (20N3), Yoga 14 (20FY), T430s (IPS FHD + Classic Keyboard), X220 4291-4BG
X61 7673-V2V, T60 2007-QPG, T42 2373-F7G, X32 (IPS Screen), A31p w/ Ultrabay Numpad

And the final decision is: **drumroll**
