x220 Questions and Thoughts.

#1 Post by majkey » Thu Nov 16, 2017 11:40 am

Got my first Thinkpad from a buddy of mine this summer. A T61 and I absolutely loved it. Never had a laptop with that quality and serviceability. I immediately upgraded the CPU to a T9500. installed a SSD and a caddy for a standard HDD. This old relic is fast as fu*k and made me fall in love with thinkpads. But I wanted somethink more modern but with still the classic keyboard. So I bought a used x220 with I7 2620m cpu. Same story with this one. Upgraded the [censored] out of it. IPS SLB3, 16GB 1600mhz ram, Intel 7260 AC DualBand and a WD Blue 3D nand 500gb SSD. Also replaced the thermalpaste with what says to be the best one. Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut. Did a BIG change in temp. Before it got up to 95 degrees and start throttling under max load/stress. With the new paste applied it gets to 80 degrees max, and absolutely no throttling. Success.
Sorry for the long story, but Im so amazed with the quality so I had to tell my story :D :D .
Now for the questions. The only thing this amazing laptop cant do Is gaming. But I plan getting a EGPU setup. But does my cpu work for some basic gaming?
Or will the I7 2620m bottleneck the [censored] out of a say Nvidia 1050 gpu? I already bought the EGPU Expresscard hardware. Still have to buy the gpu. But it would be disappointing if the CPU ruins my plans.
Second question. What more can I do to upgrade this amazing laptop  ?
Thanks for reading

The CPU will not bottleneck you. The fact that the eGPU connection is a PCIe x1 might.

One more thing: replace the IPS HD with an IPS FHD, after applying nitrocaster's FHD-mod, see here: viewtopic.php?f=43&t=122640
