x200s every time gets stuck on reboot

#1 Post by alisan » Sun Dec 03, 2017 1:12 pm

Hello,

My x200s gets stuck on reboot every time, does not matter if I restart it using the OS or simply during POST/Bios using CTRL-ALT-DEL, it gets stuck always with a blank screen, only bluetooth, power and battery led are on.

Also, very often (like once out of 2), it does not boot, it passes bios POST then it tries to load OS bootloader for the boot device, but then nothing, just a blinking cursor. This happens on the hard drive and USB live OS.

Have you tried another HD or SSD?

Also, Intel me seems to be giving problems.

Under Linux, loading the mei_me driver gives

Code: Select all

wait hw ready failed
hw_start failed ret = -62
H_RST is set=0x80282815
This happens both if AMT is enabled or disabled, however when AMT is enabled, the PC shows the following message after POST

Code: Select all

Intel ME unconfiguration in progress...
after about a minute it continues to boot (but will redo it on the next reboot)

The unconfiguation thing is consistent with the Linux mei driver message (H_RST is set). But I have really no idea how hardware reset can be set/unset.

I've opened it, to see that the bios flash was unsoldered/soldered. I'm pretty sure that the previous owner had done that to neutralize me, thus the error. I've seen on me cleaner github people reporting those errors after clearing out me. I've contacted the previous owner for confirmation.

Now I'm not sure if that is related to the more annoying problems I'm having, PC gets stuck always on soft reboot+does not always boot after POST. Would it be possible to restore the original content of the eeprom (with an external flasher) to see if the problem persists?

Owner confirmed that ME was not modified. ME Windows or Linux driver fails to communicate to ME firmware. My problem is similar to one described here viewtopic.php?f=43&t=125188

same messages and very long boot times after I turned off the me in the bios, but I researched it little bit more and found out that people have same problem, restart of cmos (taking battery out and pushing the power on button for half a minute) after doing this, some restarts some playing around with the bios and it went out. Also I did the bios /EC update of the system which brings longer battery power :D hope it will help you friend

If you have an external flasher, flash libreboot. That will solve the ME errors.
T420 i7 3612QM seabios; T420 i7 3630QM; T400 Q9100 seabios; T61 P9600; T60 libreboot; x62; x60s libreboot, led; x24 xiphmont led

I do have an external flasher, I wanted to use me_cleaner first, and then eventually flash libreboot. But I failed to read the bios chip using a pomona clip... The bios chip is very thin.

I tried to solder thin wires on the required pins, but then again, it is very difficult (at least for me, with my not so good soldering iron).

I could retry again, but I'm afraid to brake it, specially because from the first soldering attempt, the surrounding of the bios got a bit messy.

I flashed a few x200s and do not remember the chip being 'thin'. It was a very easy machine to flash, as I only had to remove the keyboard, or perhaps keyboard and palm rest.

If you couldn't read from the chip maybe your wiring is wrong, or wires between flasher and clip are too long. Or the rate you are reading at is not ideal.

./flashrom -p linux_spi:dev=/dev/spidev1.0,spispeed=512 -r factory.rom

Are you sure it was a x200s? Also I had to completely disassemble the laptop in order to remove the board to reach the "thin and tiny" bios chip, look at this link.

No, I am not sure. I have one of the machines here, and it is an x200. My mistake.

From the link you posted, the x200s looks much more complicated - and the chip is completly different from the x200 I flashed.

edit: check around the board, you may find other pads which connect to the eeprom pins. I'm not sure if that is the case with the x200s -- the t420, for example, does have pads for each pin.
