Do I replace my IPS X220?

#1 Post by thelash » Mon Jan 15, 2018 7:23 pm

Have enjoyed a reasonably specced X220 for a couple of years - best thing I did to it was replace the TN screen with a brand new IPS. Am tempted by a 3rd gen X1 Carbon on Trademe - our NZ equiv of ebay. However, it only has the 1920 x 1080 fhd non ips screen, which - like most TN thinkpads - seems to get pretty disparaging comments on review. Ex business lease IPS equipped thinkpads are pretty rare here; and apart from a simple screen swap, I don't want to do the complex conversions that are so popular on forums like this one. Is the X220 ips screen that good, and are the later FHD non ips screens really that bad?
T430 ips, T440p.

That depends on who you ask. I don't believe the new TN screens on Thinkpads are substantially better than old TN screens, resolution aside. If you felt a big difference going from TN to IPS on your X220, you may feel going back to the TN as a downgrade.

Not familiar with the Carbon, I don't know how simple/complicated it is to swap the screen there. 3rd gen Carbon apparently also has a QHD IPS option, if you want an even higher resolution.
