X201: Can I replace CCFL-WXGA screen with LED-WXGA+ screen?

#1 Post by RealBlackStuff » Sat Mar 03, 2018 9:33 am

This has been mentioned many times in many places, but I have never seen any solution.
I have a spare complete LED-WXGA+ (1440x900) screen incl. LED-cable and LED-board.
Can I take a standard X201 with CCFL-WXGA and just swap its CCFL-LCD/cable/inverter with my above LED-set?
Theoretically I see no problems other than maybe:
- the LED-screen is a bit thinner and has no screw-holes for the (CCFL-)brackets.
- but bit of glue (brackets to LCD) and filling material between LCD and lid (to lift the LCD up a bit) will do wonders there.
Am I right?

I realize I will lose the use of the webcam, so what?
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

Regardless, I'm going to try it.
Maybe I'll let you know the outcome.

The answer is "YES".
It would need some dremeling at the bottom of where the screen would rest on the lid.
A rubber strip thin underneath/around the LCD-edges and a thin layer of foam (both ca. 2.5 - 3mm) between LCD and lid would fill the rest up nicely.
Some double-sided tape between LCD, rubber strip, and foam, as well as between foam and lid, would hold the LCD itself properly in place.
In the end I didn't do it, because the LCD turned out to have some vertical stripes.
(tested it before I started dremeling)
DANG!

However, LED-LCD-cable which includes LED-board (FRU 44C9919) is good and for sale if anybody is interested.
$10 shipped (USA only).
Payment via PayPal using option "send money to friends or family".
