x220t insane temps

#1 Post by TheForgottenKing » Fri May 04, 2018 10:42 pm

Repasted, repasted twice

Temps max around 93c under max load

Should I get a new fan? Current one occasionally makes a rattling sound, also I have no thermal pad, do I need one?

Did you over-paste it?
A dollop of thermal paste the size of a rice-corn is usually enough.
May one ask what causes your max load?

There is no thermal pad on that heatsink.

I don't know if I did, I am new to this. Did a pea size, temps were high, waited a bit, added a little more, temps still high

Might try again with a clean repasting

Using mx4

Loads are while playing Minecraft which maxes the CPU

This is normal under max load. Imo, you'll have a hard time getting it under 90deg.
I suspect you have an i7 cpu, correct? They run a little hotter than the i5s in my experience.
But it's not much to worry about. Some laptops don't thermal throttle until 95-100deg.
Download TPFanControl and set it to smart.

Try using a card to flatten a very small rice sized blob of paste. It ahould have a very thin coating. all over most of the CPU.

The efficiency of two screens equally sized with equal numbers if pixels are equal. The time spent by a 4:3 user complaining about 16:9 is proportional to the inefficiency working with a 16:9 display, therefore the amount of useful work extracted is equal.

Maybe the heatsink is not making proper contact with the CPU.

If the heatsink isn't lying flat against the CPU's silicon die, it doesn't matter how tight it's screwed.

One method I've read about is to turn each of the mounting screws 1/4 to 1/2 turn at a time, in order-- turn screw #1 half-turn, then #2, #3, etc. until it;s tight.
