Top-specced X200/X201 questions

#1 Post by wujstefan » Fri Aug 03, 2018 3:42 am

I am just digging in X20x area lately.

What I have found is a top X201s and a couple of mobos for X201. The boards I can source are i5-580m i5-560m and i7-620m (so all the 3 best non-51nb units).

And here comes the question: what impact do those have on battery life or heat? I've found i5-520m unit very hot; way more than P8600/P8700 in X200, and am digging if i5-580m or i7-620m are even worse.

I was thnking the low voltage in X201s will do any better. Well it does not, it runs hotter than X201 while for some reason performing worse than i5-520m in the terms of GPU. This is most likely de to reasonably higher GPU clocks on the non-low-voltage chip. Some may ask: why do you need graphics on X201? Well, the answer is, because I like to play some older games when having some spare time :)

Another thing: is it possible to check whether X200 LCD is CCFL or LED using only machine type?

No, the MTM program gives no indication.
Use this PSREF for withdrawn laptops: http://psref.lenovo.com/syspool/Sys/PDF ... k_2013.pdf
According to that PSREF, some X200/X200s have CCFL, some have LED, but all X201/X201s have LED-backlight.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

Question: Have you performed any heatsink maintenance on that X201 i5-520m? If you've already done so, and the temps are still bad, then the possibilities could be narrowed down to:

1. bad heatsink (heatpipe failure or contact issue)
2. inadequate heatsink -- toss-up between design flaw in Lenovo (under-spec heatsink) or Intel (TDP computation was too optimistic)
3. some fault in CPU or board that causes higher power consumption (and consequently higher temps),

In any case, I remember an older thread about an X201 exhibiting unusually high temps. If you are able, you can try using the X201 heatsink on an X201s board, if it's possible.

It's not overheating. Just sporting casual temps for this system. It is simply way hotter than super-cool running X200 :)

To be fair, the Core 2 Duo CPUs were very mature at that point. Arrandale (all Gen 1 mobile Core i series with integrated graphics) seemed like an interim design (patchwork might be a better word)-- while the CPU was die-shrunk to 32nm, the memory and graphics controllers were on a separate silicon die that's still on a 45nm process (!!). I can't believe Intel would actually do something like that.

But I'm glad that the X201s with an X201 heatsink isn't overheating. I have a conceptually similar Frankenpad-- an X60s Core Solo U1300 (1.06GHz, 5.5w TDP) with a regular X60 heatsink. It's known that the original X60 heatsink isn't that good (esp. when compared to ones for the X61), but it keeps the CPU temp around 50c-- it's actually a struggle to push the CPU temp to 60c.
