A new SSD for Lenovo X220
I've to replace my Samsung 840 (128 Gb) with a larger and possibly faster ssd (at least 256 Gb, 512 Gb would be perfect).
Which is the best option at the moment, for quality/price ratio ?
It seems that mSata card is no more a valuable option...

Re: A new SSD for Lenovo X220
If you want a 512 GB SSD your going to have to spend $100 or more. A 240GB sandisk drive only costs $56 but as you stated you would like to have a 512GB SSD.

Your not going to find a 512GB SSD for $70. Maybe on ebay but I personally don't trust ebay for things like that.

Re: A new SSD for Lenovo X220
I don't need 512 Gb.
I'd PREFER 512 but 256 could be however more than sufficient.

Re: A new SSD for Lenovo X220
In Italy (Amazon) for the same price (about 50/60 euro) there are Crucial MX500, SanDisk SDSSDA 240, Samsung MZ-76E250B and Drevo X1 Pro.
I sincerely don't know if they all have or not Sata III interface.

Re: A new SSD for Lenovo X220
Pretty much any SSD made in the last 6-7 years is SATA III by default. I'd likely narrow it down to Samsung vs. Crucial, do the research and pull the trigger.ThinkGreen wrote: ↑Wed Aug 22, 2018 9:57 am

Which one would I personally buy ? Neither.
I'm a strong believer in spending a bit more on a top-notch SSD, this one has been my preferred choice for both personal use and custom builds for several years now:

Re: A new SSD for Lenovo X220
Thanks for your opinion. In which aspects Sandiks would be CONCRETELY better than Samsung, crucial and so on ?
As alternative could I consider to use the mSata slot putting an M.2 sata inside it, keeping my 2.5" sad Samsung 840 Evo ?

It's a drive designed to take a beating. Read the reviews from when it came out. Oh, and it's still MLC. As opposed to TLC on most modern drives.ThinkGreen wrote: ↑Wed Aug 22, 2018 1:55 pmThanks for your opinion. In which aspects Sandiks would be CONCRETELY better than Samsung, crucial and so on ?
mSATA slot on these machines is SATA II. As for 840 Evo...I'd *really* be looking to move away from it, and fast.As alternative could I consider to use the mSata slot putting an M.2 sata inside it, keeping my 2.5" sad Samsung 840 Evo ?

Samsung 860 Evo could be a right option for about 65 euro (250 Gb) or there are better "solutions", in terms of performance and reliabilty ?

To be honest Samsung 840 Evo results to be Sata III and not Sata II.

Re: A new SSD for Lenovo X220
I'm a bit confused by this question. Were you thinking of putting the M.2 sata in the main drive bay? Would it fit?ThinkGreen wrote: ↑Wed Aug 22, 2018 1:55 pm

I ask because when I searched the website of my usual disk supplier for mSATA, the site produced a list of M.2 drives and I spent a bit of time checking before I discovered that the two, and their connectors, were not the same. All this new technology has left me behind, I'm afraid.

I did not remember that mSata and m.2 have different form factor... and connectors.

Re: A new SSD for Lenovo X220
FWIW, I bought this Crucial 500GB SSD for my X220 a little over 2 months ago. It is currenty priced at $99.95 (with Amazon Prime). The 250GB version is $64.99 (with Amazon Prime).

I am happy with my purchase so far.
akula66's Sandisk Extreme no doubt is more feature rich, but a bit pricey at the moment for many of us.

That's not the problem. A few months after the Evo 840 series came out, users started noticing severe writes performance degradations, which took Samsung a few firmware updates to resolve, but it does look like eventually they resolved them (I've been periodically tracking performance in my X220, which incidentally also has an Evo 840, albeit a 512GB version).ThinkGreen wrote: ↑Fri Aug 24, 2018 3:06 amTo be honest Samsung 840 Evo results to be Sata III and not Sata II.

I don't know if You're serious or if U are joking...
More reliable alternatives could be Samsung 860 Evo and crucial mx500, for about 30/20 euro more than SanDisk.
