X200 AFFS Buzzing issue

#1 Post by Lundy » Wed Oct 24, 2018 5:45 pm

I've installed the AFFS screen HV121WX4-120 works but now there is a strange buzzing noise coming from behind the screen. I was wondering if this is normal or if I missed a step? Also the white colors are more yellowish so not sure if thats a symptom of the problem as well or just needs to be calibrated. :?

AFFS screens can be yellowish and your buzzing noise may be the inverter.

The yellowish hue may be a sign of an aging CCFL.
The buzzing noise would be the inverter, which could be an issue with it or the CCFL.

Hm there was no buzzing sound before I swapped the display.

Edit: weird after maxing out the brightness the noise went away. It seems the noise culprit is some sort of transformer or maybe the inverter shawross mentioned? Copper wrapped thing where the the power adapter from the display goes.

The inverter does have a transformer. And yes it's the source of the buzzing sound.

It would be nice if there exists a LED backlight kit for this screen.

Do you think I should try putting some hot glue on the transformer?

I don't recommend putting hot glue on something that gets warm. Maybe some clear 5-minute epoxy?

Make one.

The efficiency of two screens equally sized with equal numbers if pixels are equal. The time spent by a 4:3 user complaining about 16:9 is proportional to the inefficiency working with a 16:9 display, therefore the amount of useful work extracted is equal.

I have to turn my shed into a proper workshop first. Still lacking key pieces of equipment and furniture, but at least I got a soldering station now.
Besides, I don't even know how xiphmont makes those LED strips, or where to source the LEDs-- maybe I could scavenge them from broken laptop screens or flatbed scanners.

I'm hoping to finish setting it up by year's end. Among the things I need is a ladder chair. :)

Well, thats one of those odd things I've never seen before and now I feel like I gotta run out and buy one. Thanks for triggering my impulse buy.

I'm planning on making one though. :D
There's a simpler design that uses plywood and doesn't need any fancy woodworking skills (like making mortise and tenon joints).

Oh, wait, we're derailing another thread again.

And there is no cushion so you should modify the mechanical to add that. Again, back to topic before we get into Wind Powered RLL 2,7 OptoFloppy Worm Drives that use 68 pin scsi or something

Hey thanks for help I ended up fixing it for the most part by removing a orangish wrapper around the inverter and wrapping it with electrical tape. Noise is still there but suppressed enough that I can't hear it unless my ear is up against the monitor.

btw if anyone has a color profile they can share for this display would be great! I've seen it shared on some older threads but the download link seems expired :(

If I were you, I'd replace that inverter before it sets a possible fire to your laptop!
Those transformers put out between 700 and 1200 Volts, that's why they start buzzing as they get hotter with age.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)
