Curiosity - WinXP x64 SP2 works in EFI mode on X220

#1 Post by tpx61 » Mon Oct 29, 2018 12:36 pm

I managed to run WinXP x64 SP2 on the ThinkPad X220. Read this post and preferably the whole topic:

Does Windows XP have EFI?

Curiosity indeed. My understanding is that some hacked virtualization is going on, using the EFI files from Vista / Server 2008 and VMWare?

Is there a point to it? Even if you want to run XP 64-bit, can't it be done in Legacy mode?

Hacked ??? Simply, EFI files from beta Vista or Server 2008 x64 are suitable for running WinXP x64.

Of course you can use it in the Legacy mode but it is well known that WinXP does not support EFI - and yet it is possible

So in the end VMWare is not involved? You can boot it as a host OS? I guess it is clearer now that I re-read it.

Winload.efi is taken from Vista as well? In that case it might be more accurate to say that EFI supports Windows XP, not that Windows XP supports EFI. But I guess it's a meaningless technicality, as long as it works.

Next I am waiting for someone with a 32-bit UEFI system to try to use the 32-bit Windows EFI files and boot Windows 2000.

Even though I don't even have a copy of Windows XP x64, I appreciate this kind of tinkering. Thinkpadders are a crazy lot (in a good way). We all are.

Agreed. I like hardware mods since I like hands-on electro-mechanical stuff.

You software modders are really above my pay grade.

With these EFI files from Longhorn Server 2008 x64 WinXP x64 boot: bootmgfw.efi, winload.efi, wgl4_boot.ttf and BCD edited:
  • in VMware after install graphic driver (VMware Tools)
  • in X220 if install graphic driver Universal VESA/VBE Video Display Driver
WinXP x86 also work with EFI files from Vista Longhorn x86 - for now tested in VMware because I do not have hardware with 32-bit EFI. AFAIK Lenovo Flex10 with firmware 93CN19WW has EFI 32-bit.

That's cool how you got XP to work with EFI :)
