X220 gpu pad

#1 Post by Kopeika » Thu Dec 20, 2018 2:13 pm

Hi, my x220 didn't want to start because of a fan error. I've removed the keyboard and saw that it spins for a second in on start and then stops. When I disassembled the laptop to clean it I've noticed that it is moving very hard and decided to rejplace it. When I was cleaning the heatsink I removed the gpu (I assume) thermal pad. Is it ok to replace it with thermal paste or better source a pad. Also I disconnected the bios battery by mistake should I expect any issues with this. Sorry if it has been discussed but I'm forced to use tablet now and I'm too old for this touch stuff :D

It's not the GPU. The Intel HD 3000 graphics in the X220 is part of the processor itself. What you're looking at is the Platform Controller Hub (PCH) which is the equivalent of the southbridge chip. It handles the USB and SATA ports, as well as the PCIe x1 links for the WiFi card and the Expresscard slot.

And no, you cannot use paste alone, as the gap is too big. You need a thermal pad, I think 15mm x 15mm with 1mm thickness is enough.
Planned Purchase: T480s i5-8350 FHD Touch
Impulse Buy: Thinkpad not named for safety reasons
