X220 T Display Problem
X220 T Display Problem
Am experiencing problems with one of the household X220 tablets, where the screen has started to malfunction, and am unsure if it is the actual panel or the onboard graphics.
- Screen looks pixelated and psychedelic, and when showing monochrome colours like on the the windows 10 update page appears to be cycling through different colours.
- VGA output to an external monitor is normal.
Any thoughts or tips?
Many thanks!

Re: X220 T Display Problem
Ok so the graphics chip can probably be safely ruled out if VGA has normal output.
Can you take a small video of the problem because depending on what it looks like it could be the LCD or the LCD cable.

The efficiency of two screens equally sized with equal numbers if pixels are equal. The time spent by a 4:3 user complaining about 16:9 is proportional to the inefficiency working with a 16:9 display, therefore the amount of useful work extracted is equal.

Here's a short clip -- hope it gives you some insight:

Re: X220 T Display Problem
Honestly that could do either way. Put some pressure at various points around the bottom of the LCD. The controllerboard sits down there and if it is a LCD issue this might show some signs of correcting it.
Otherwise you might want to reseat the LCD connector and see if that does anything.
The last possibility is your X220T could have taken some LSD
Although given the video.....I can't safely rule out the Intel Integrated Graphics either....hmmm....
Lets see what others say first.

Yup, a few thumb presses slightly left of centre and the display is once again perfect.Thinkpad4by3 wrote: ↑Sat Dec 22, 2018 11:08 amPut some pressure at various points around the bottom of the LCD. For now!
Does this help you to narrow the problem down further? The controllerboard? I happen to have another x220t lying around i have used for spares if you think it is worth trying to replace . . . ??

Re: X220 T Display Problem
Given slightly left of center....that looks to put your finger right over the LCD connector. That leads me to think a bad connection, but the controllerboard could still be at fault.
The controllerboard is part of the LCD(and not replaceable)...your best bet to start with is to reseat the LCD connector. Then you probably want to swap the panels with your spare if that doesn't work. I'd bet its probably a controllerboard issue over a bad cable. The graphics chip is completely out of the question now...its fine. The cable is probably fine if the picture came up pushing there.
If you don't want to swap panels...you could probably install the panel with a piece of tape or two where your thumb was and just keep pressure on the panel given it comes back. There have been times where that has come in handy in the past. (*cough* T60p line problems *cough*)

Unfortunately the one component not fully up to scratch on my spare is the panel, which has some ugly marks at the bottom.
And given that the problems have arisen on my 9-year old's machine primarily used for non-mission critical Roblox and Youtube viewing I am inclined to cross my fingers and wait to see if/when the issue reappears before taking it apart
But once again thank you very much for you invaluable assistance. Merry Christmas!
