X300 mods?

#1 Post by stasheck » Mon Jan 07, 2019 5:24 am

Hi,
I have a 12-years-old X300 (still going strong!), and I love it - however, it's no longer my daily driver because - of course - it's slooow. I'm already using DualIDA, and considering clock chip mod for a bit of a boost, but let's face it - it's still going to be slow (and the screen, while it has a great 1440x900 resolution, has awful contrast).

There are mobo replacement mods for X2xx series, but can X300 mobo be replaced with something newer?

You can't even put an X301 board in there without modifying the chassis, as the X301 has a DP port where the X300's rear USB 2.0 is located, and that USB port got relocated next to the LAN port.
Daily driver: X220 4291-C91 i7-2620M

Backup: X601 Core 2 Duo T8100
Toy: X60F Core Solo U1300
On loan: X220 4291-P79 i5-2520M
In pieces: two retired but working X61Ts
RIP: 760XD 9546-U9E; X61 7676-A24; and a BOE-Hydis HV121P01-100 in failed SXGA+ mod

Well, honestly X300 has no chance to stand up the day really.
It's super-highly-unmoddable unit. Still a great machine tho.
Looking for X301 would be the best option to you. Or, modding X230 w/13,3" screen if this size is what you are looking for. Or looking on 51nb options. Or... I don't know what else really :)
Too many thinkpads not enough time!

I assume your X300 is already maxed out with a good SSD and 8GB RAM, right? Eventually try a lighter Linux Distro, this may speed it up, depending on what your "daily driver tasks" are...

If you use Windows try the Slimjet browser.
lenovo "Super" T420 i7 2670qm WQHD 16GB
lenovo T500 P9700 Radeon 3650 WUXGA 8GB
lenovo T601F T7500 NVS 140m SXGA+ 8GB

Enable 2 finger scroll on any Synaptics touchpads with registry.

I still run an X301 SU9400 with the dual IDA and for what I use it for it still does the job.

I run a debloated Windows 7 and don't run javascript by default. I will probably look to dual boot with Mint in the future.

If you still like the X300 then try to find a cheap X301 maybe with the SU9600 board.
Active --- Love the X series
