X220 upgrade to 16GB RAM. Tipps

#1 Post by bleda3 » Mon Jan 28, 2019 5:52 pm

Hey there
I have the following specs and I would like to upgrade to 16 GB RAM, as I sometimes use a virtulmachine with windows 10 for some university applications. It's the first time I try to upgrade RAM so help and tips would be very welcome.
* Any suggestion about manufactures for two 8gb RAM-Sticks for the X220?
* Much of use to go for higher Mhz than 13333 as well?
* Is Voltage (1.5V or 1.35V) an important issue?
* Good and cheap sellers? Refurbished is okay. Aliexpress? Fast delivery is not important.

I myself found those sellers

Lenovo's spec sheet (https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/pd015812) says the maximum amount of memory you can install is 8gb. It only supports so-dimms up to 4gb.
Edit: Apparently it still works with 16gb anyway

They said that about the T520 too, but it takes 16 GB and uses all of it.

Bleda3

Good to go with 16 Gb in the x220.

I have an x220 and an x220T, and both are outfitted with 2 x 8 Gb modules.

As for RAM speed, depends on the BIOS version you're on.

Check out http://x220.mcdonnelltech.com/resources/

(More info on the x220-series than you will ever need!)

Regards.

I'm using two sticks labeled Kingston HX318LS11lBK2/16 8GB 1,35 V. They are clocked at 1866MHz but due to Sandy Bridge specification RAM works at 1333 MHz. Not all BIOSes support these sticks. The early official Lenovo should work, the newer limits the supported RAM specs. There is a modded BIOS linked at http://x220.mcdonnelltech.com/resources/ site, I have tested this before and it works as charm with my sticks. I'm on coreboot now.

Last year I bought from this memory kit from Amazon: Crucial 16GB Kit (8GBx2) DDR3/DDR3L 1866 MT/s (PC3-14900) Unbuffered SODIMM 204-Pin Memory - CT2K102464BF186D and installed this kit in my X220 (bios version 1.26). I works just fine, and runs at full speed (as verified by CPU-Z).

From what I've read, the BIOS versions from 1.28 and backwards run the RAM at full 1866 speed. Some newer modded BIOS versions are reported to work as well. The latest several BIOS versions do not allow a downgrade - at least from version 1.42 and onward.

Scroll down on the following page to find older official BIOS versions for download: https://support.lenovo.com/tw/en/downloads/ds018805

thanks olex126 for this very usefull link. thanks as.nielo and gomjabber for the tipps on hardware.
@all: 2x8gb is def possible and higher MHZ with a modded BIOS-Version as well.

pro tip from the vid : have a second HDD with Windows on it, so BIOS upgrade is way easier

I am going to flash the new BIOS this evening as I should have done already way ago after Meltdown and spectre. It removes the hardware "whitelisting" so it's easier to buy ram and it allows higher MHZ.

If anyone still has specific manufacturer tipps, please still let me know.
