Counterfeit battery?

I bought one of these for an X201s that I want to sell on the forum:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-GENUINE-Ba ... 2749.l2649

Lenovo software says it's not genuine Lenovo, and I'm certainly willing to believe it. It looks genuine, and has the internal information (Sanyo, 2013 manufacturing date) that matches a real battery. Have other forum members come across counterfeits?

At this price - unlikely to be genuine. Counterfeits are of much higher exterior quality and semblance to an original these days. What they are on the inside is for anyone to guess.

Does the serial number printed on the battery match the serial displayed by the battery software? This is typically the easiest (usually fool-proof) way to detect fakes.

Well, two surprises:

First, after I installed the latest Lenovo Vantage under Windows 10, it didn't complain about the battery. It seems to say it's genuine.

Next, the serial number shown in Lenovo Vantage exactly matches the number under the bar code on the battery itself.

So maybe this was a false positive? Thank you for suggesting the serial number check!

It may be legit after all. 8) If it's counterfeit, it will be the most advanced forgery I have yet to witness.

Also the manufacturing date seems plausible; although it also can be faked, most fake batteries of high quality are made in the past few years, and would spot a later date.
