ThinkPad X220 overheating

#1 Post by lautr3c » Sun Sep 29, 2019 7:58 am

Hi everybody. How are you?

Rencently i bought a ThinkPad x220(Core I5). Is a very good computer for study. But everytime i tried to watch a youtube or a twitch stream in 720p or more the processor reaches very high temperatures, like 70ºC~76ºC and the fan 3700 RPM+.

I already replace the old thermal paste and clean the fan. According the OS the processor is using only 30% of processing capacity. I'm running Debian 10.1.0 and Firefox.

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forum.

These temperatures are not abnormal. If the CPU stabilizes on them and does not get increasingly hotter and hotter, I would not worry too much.

1. AFAIK hardware video decoding is disabled in Linux builds of Firefox.
2. What's the temperature when idle? What's the ambient temperature in your place?

I can't tell if the video decoding is enabled or disabled. The temperature on the idle is around 49°C~53°C. The local temperature right now is 31°C. I'm using common thermal paste, theres any other thermal paste to indicate?

Sometimes have peaks of high temperature around 83°C. Does this affect too much the processor lifespan?

I don't think it will have any meaningful effect on lifespan.

31C!? Yeah, that's gonna raise the system temps by a considerable margin.

83C peak is a bit hot, but still within limits. I'd be worried if it consistently exceeds 85C.

Maybe you used a low quality thermal paste?
Or too little, or too much?
Instructions: http://www.arcticsilver.com/pdf/appmeth ... d_v1.1.pdf
Recommended: at least Noctua NT-H2 or Prolimatech PK3, best is Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut.
AS5 (Arctic Silver 5) is no longer recommended, as it takes 200 hours to settle in.
It also is not very good any longer.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (the Real Black Stuff). And pigs CAN fly!
