x201T Dual Boot

#1 Post by jono_1uk » Sun Oct 20, 2019 12:43 pm

Good Afternoon

I am awaiting delivery of an 201 Tablet with Windows 10 64 bit.
I would like to dual boot it with a Linux OS ..which one will have the best driver support for the touch screen ( and other stuff) and will run the smoothest.

Thanks

Jon

I don't have an X201T, but there's a good chance that Linux will have better driver support than Win10-- IIRC Intel only wrote Win10 graphics drivers for the Ivy Bridge (X230 and its contemporaries) and later generations.

Windows 10 might end up installing the basic graphics driver. This means anything that involves graphics will be slow-- e.g. dragging a window and the bottom half is trailing behind. :x

Not sure if you can install the Win 7 or Win 8.1 Intel HD graphics driver on Win 10.

Oh, and Power Manager is not supported in Windows 10. I dunno if there's a replacement that isn't a bloated mess.

It also means no standby, and poor (if at all) multi-monitor support.

Yes, after some hacking. See: https://www.reddit.com/r/Windows10/comm ... _get_them/

That is, unless something major changed in latest versions of Win10 that make the drivers actually incompatible.

I find that I don't really need Power Manager in Win10; I just install Lenovo Vantage, tell it to put the battery gauge on the taskbar, then uninstall Vantage. The battery gauge stays, giving me basic controls, while the rest is handled by the OS power management.

Latest Windows 10 has much advantages over linux. Microsoft team continuously work on improving Windows and nowadays almost all the devices drivers are also automatically updated through windows update.

The problem in this case is that the manufacturer (Intel) never wrote proper Windows 10 drivers for it in the first place., so there's nothing to update.
And having automatic driver updates is not always a good thing, as a new driver can have bugs that the old version didn't have.
