x201 black screen when undocked
x201 black screen when undocked
Hello,
I have a x201, that is used with a docking station and an external monitor. Up to know, it has been properly working, but now, my son is using it for high school. He didn't realize that for undocking the laptop, this must be powered off, or press the undock button.
The issue is that yesterday morning he powered on the laptop undocked, and the screen was black. We docked it with the lid down, and we could see the Windows logon page on the external monitor, we lid up the laptop screen, but it was balck.
I've tried yesterday evening to remove the battery for some minutes, and inserting it again, and seemed to work. But this morning has happened the same.
I've tried to pull off the battery for 1 hour, and then power on the laptop undocked, but still the same screen is black. FN+F7 is not doing anything.
I'm in a trouble as my son need it for school, and if he doesn't take it teachers consider as a fault.
I don't know what else to do to make the LCD screen work again.
I'm in a trouble as my son need it for school, and if he doesn't take to school teachers consider it as a fault.
Does anyboy has any solution?
Regards,

Re: x201 black screen when undocked
Welcome to the forum.
Sorry to hear about your trouble. It sounds like something is bad with the LED board supplying power to the LCD screen, or a blown fuse on the motherboard (though the latter is inconsistent with the fact that it worked off and on for a while).
Honestly, I don't think it's very likely that it happened due to undocking while powered. I do this all the time with all my laptops, and it hasn't cause a hardware fault, not once.
The LED board can be replaced, if need be, and it's not a very complicated process either. What is the exact machine type number of your X201? Should be on the sticker at the bottom, starting with 4 digits.

Re: x201 black screen when undocked
Hi dr_sst,
Yes, it's quite annoying.
The product id is 3323A3G. I've seen in other posts that this could be by a malfunction inverter led board. When I power on the laptop, I can see the Thinkpad logo, but with low bright, so the panel I understand is fine.
I think the part number for the inverter led board is 45M2812, and yes, it seems not vey complicated to replace it. Do you have any manual?

Get the X200/X201 manual from the HMM link at the top of this page.

Yes, the number is correct. You can find the X200/X201 maintenance manual here:

Re: x201 black screen when undocked
Is it possible this action changed the settings in 'Monitors' to keep the monitor off at all times? As if only an external monitor was being used 100% of the time?
I would check the monitor settings just in case when you have it docked and can use the external monitor to check.

Where should I check it? It's a Windows 10 with Intel graphics driver, and Intel control panel.MikalE wrote: ↑Fri Nov 08, 2019 7:34 amIs it possible this action changed the settings in 'Monitors' to keep the monitor off at all times? As if only an external monitor was being used 100% of the time?

Re: x201 black screen when undocked
Well,
I've replaced the inverter and F1 fuse with no luck, the screen is still black.
Any other ideas? Wich other fuse could be the cause?

Re: x201 black screen when undocked
I've replaced the motherboard, the inverter and the LCD cable, but still happens the same.
What about the switch magnet, could it be the cause? How could it be repair?
Thanks,
