Office 365 on X201s?

#1 Post by MichaelS » Fri Jan 03, 2020 5:57 pm

I'm about to install Windows 10 Pro on my X201s, and want to know if I can run Office 365 on it, or if I'd be better off running Office 2019.

Microsoft says Graphics requirement for Office 365 is following, and am unsure if the X201s supports this:

Windows OS: Graphics hardware acceleration requires DirectX 9 or later, with WDDM 2.0 or higher for Windows 10 (or WDDM 1.3 or higher for Windows 10 Fall Creators Update).

Can anyone tell me? All advice welcome. Thanks!

Office 2019 is actually a freeze of what the installable Office 365 package looked like in early 2018. It's a perpetual license so there's no subscription fees or progressive, constant updating. So that could be advantageous to you, or the opposite. Its system requirements won't change like 365's will as it evolves with newer features, and the average manufacture date of the machines its target/broad audience uses gets newer.

From what I've seen the 1st generation Intel HD graphics found on the X201 only go as high as WDDM 1.1, so you won't get graphics acceleration in Windows 10, so don't worry about it in Office.

Still using Office 2010 together with Ubit-menu, to give it the "classic(?)" looks of Office 2007.
No interest (or need, as I'm retired) to change layouts or looks any further.
I refuse to sink as low as to use Google-Gagging Docs and its spyware ilk, that reads every output in the clouds.
If I ever change, it will be to LibreOffice, at the same time that I ditch Windows for good.

I'd strongly advise to either stick with W7 or upgrade to W8.1, which will still be supported for a few more years.

Thanks for the info on Office and the heads-up about graphics acceleration.

May I assume that both Office 2019 and Office 365 will run equally well on the machine?

Thanks

Thanks, it hadn't occurred to me to run Windows 8.1.
