both VGA not working with Ultrabase (X201)

#1 Post by achat_2 » Mon Feb 17, 2020 2:06 pm

I am currently using 2 laptops, my old X201s - Win 7 (which appeared to be dying two weeks ago, but now seems stable again) and an X201 - Win 10 (I bought second hand in a rush because of my old one dying... ).
This second one came with an Ultrabase. I never used one of those.
I have tried few things on it - DVD RW is working properly, sound even, usb ports, etc.

But if I connect an external monitor directly to the VGA of both laptops without the ultrabase both work correctly, just plugging in the cable.
If I put the laptops on the ultrabase, not the VGA of the laptops, nor the VGA of the Ultrabase work. No video signal on the external monitor.

Is there any other attempt I should try before to call the previous owner?

thanks in advance,
A.

Just if it makes any difference, this is the order of the connections:

Laptop on the ultrabase -- > power on -- > power on on the external monitor - > attempt to connect the VGA cable to laptop or ultrabase.

Is this a wrong order?

When laptop is docked, VGA on laptop is disabled and only the VGA on Ultrabase should work. This is by design. So if there is something faulty with the Ultrabase VGA, you may get into a situation where external video does not work at all.

Just to make sure it's not a silly thing like a driver issue:
  1. What display option has priority in the BIOS? There should be something like Internal LCD, VGA, DisplayPort on dock, and you get to choose the primary one.
  2. If you first connect the external display to the Ultrabase while the laptop is docked and turned off, then turn on the laptop - do you see any picture on the external screen during BIOS / boot sequence?

1. In the bios (ver 1.40) I just found "Boot dispaly device" "analog (VGA)".

2. In this way I have no screen both on the laptop and on the external monitor, I have to unplug the VGA connector to see the screen on the laptop.

Could it be just a driver issue?
I read something similar for the docking station of the X1 solved after installing specific drivers for Win 10.

But I can't find driver for the X200/X201 Ultrabase on the Lenovo website.

I'm afraid that if there is no video output in BIOS as well, then it points to a hardware defect...

what is strange is that when I plug the VGA cable Win 10 makes a sound and the moving message "check signal cable" on the external monitor actually disappears.
as if there is some sort of activity on the VGA cable..

Just found that the very same thing has happened to others but still no solution for me,
but actually the Win+Ctrl+Shift+B combination shows the laptop monitor now with the external docked

I remember reading about an issue with the X200 Ultrabase that "introduces some noise to VGA signal ", as mentioned in the thinkwiki page, and that some units had worse noise than others.

It's possilel that the noise is caused by faulty components, like resistors or capacitors that exceed their tolerance values-- similar to an old TV that drifts between channels even when the channel knob hasn't been moved. In your case, the signal noise is so bad that the VGA signal is drowned out.

Unfortunately, proper diagnosis and repair is difficult since you'd need knowledge in RF electronics, plus the right tools (oscilloscope and signal generator).

Have you tried the Displayport output on the Ultrabase?

I don't have a Display Port cable and monitor here to try, but I will try as soon as possible.
thanks!
