14 inch replacement for X230
Hi all ... I made an attempt at modding an old T420 and replacing the display with an ips. tHE mod got screwed...I had an official service place do the mod, but it did not work and some backlight on the motherboard got damaged. I reported the issue to the supplier of the modification from China, who will send me a replacement mod.
but I dont want to risk anymore...can you pls recommend a good candidate for a 14 inch second hand pc,which came with an original ips board from factory? thanks a lot. something like the x230 , T series, 14 inch, with original IPS...thanks

Re: 14 inch replacement for X230
Original IPS? Only T440s (FHD) / X1 Carbon 2nd gen (QHD) or later. And not all models (you have to confirm specific units).
Thinkpad 25 (20K7), T490 (20N3), Yoga 14 (20FY), T430s (IPS FHD + Classic Keyboard), X220 4291-4BG
X61 7673-V2V, T60 2007-QPG, T42 2373-F7G, X32 (IPS Screen), A31p w/ Ultrabay Numpad

Re: 14 inch replacement for X230
FYI: the (standard) X230 has a 12.5" screen, either TN or IPS.
It is possible to upgrade/mod that with an IPS 13.3" LCD, but that is as large as it can get.
Most upgradable 14" is the T440p, which has optional IPS FHD.
Always check the PSREF for a particular model/series to see its options.

Re: 14 inch replacement for X230
Looks like what you need is a laptop with a drop in IPS upgrade. You already have the Full HD IPS screen from the failed t420 mod, right? Is it still working? If yes, then all you need is a T440 and the FHD LCD cable-- that's because the T420 FHD mod uses the FHD IPS screen used in the T440.
Planned Purchase: T480s i5-8350 FHD Touch

I did not make myself clear. By mod I meant only some little electronic thingie that allows to connect an ips display into the t420. I believe I did not buy the screen in the end...the service provider tried the small internal adapter plus a suitable 14 inch panel, the setup screwed up my motherboard, I did not have to pay the 14 inch screen...they gave me a refurbished t420 instead, with a tn panel. It came cheaper... The cirquit is yet to come from China and will be for sale if anybody interesed, I refuse to waste more money for a nonsensical exercise...how is the T440p recommended by Realblacstuff? which type of keyboard does it have? thanks

Re: 14 inch replacement for X230
Dear RealBlackstuff
I do not want to insert a larger than intended panel into anything...
I tried to replace the TN panel with IPS in the 420 and failed.
I just am fishing for similar laptops of that age, fourteen inch, similar second hand price and caliber as x230, for which SUITABLE IPS PANELS ARE AVAILAble and can be fitted without messing with electronics...
some second hand sellers do not know and cannot find out if their machine has an IPS panel. I am happy to buy the panel but must know if the given model can accomodate an IPS panel without a need for electronic modification.

Re: 14 inch replacement for X230
I'd say 4Gb will need an upgrade, otherwise pretty usable specs. Win 10 serial numbers are now a few $$ on ebay so OS installed is no longer that much of advantage in my view..
Not sure what machines and at what price are available to you, what budget you have. There have been lots of interesting 13"-14" Thinkpads made last 10 years.. X1 Carbon of various generations for extreme lightness. Lots of X3*0 models for 13", T4** models. Some might be not that much more expensive than T440p these days, I'd look around carefully. Unfortunately I don't know which are easier to get with IPS.
I am myself stuck on <=X220 because of keyboards (X230 with X220 kbd is my top limit) but it seems you're okay with stock X230 so you may have no problem accepting keyboards on modern Thinkpads.
Just in case my cheatsheet on modern Thinkpads looks like this
- 17" P73 - bomb proof'n' heavy, wide kbd
- 15.6" P53 - bomb proof'n' heavy, wide kbd
- 15.6" P1 gen2/X1E gen2 - 1.8kg, alum chassis, seems P1 is almost a twin of X1E
- 15.6" T590 - 1.75kg, U series processor
- 14" T490 - 1.46kg, U series
- 14" X1C - 1.13kg, U series

Re: 14 inch replacement for X230
Here are some Czech alternatives for eBay
Nearby Poland has https://allegro.pl
You don't mention WHICH Thinkpad that is, presumably an xx40 model.
Only in the the T440p can you replace the CPU. In all other xx40 models the CPU is soldered in.
xx40 have a chicklet keyboard from a few manufacturers.
LiteOn is generally considered the best of those KBs, both with and without backlight.
xx40 also has the Clunkpad, which can be replaced with the touchpad+buttons from the matching xx50.
For a fully upgraded T440p with all the bells and whistles you are looking at ca. €350-400.
Less if you are lucky, more if Covid-19 has made them scarce or jacked up the price.

If you want no hassle of modding in a screen or trackpoint butons in a 14" platform, look for T450, T460 or newer with an equipped IPS screen.
