mSATA SSD wonky after X220 kept docked (powered off, charger plugged in) for two weeks
I ended up in the hospital for two weeks, and when I got home, I was greeted with an Error 2101: HDD Detection Failure (Mini SATA). This was on my X220 i7, which was left docked on the Series 3 Mini Dock (Type 4337, single DVI-D, with USB 3.0), with 90w charger attached, for two weeks.
Sometimes the mSATA SSD works though, and I get to use it hours at a time.
Last night though, when I woke it up from sleep, the SSD wasn't detected again.
Any idea what could've caused this issue to happen?
In any case, I'm planning to remove both the mSATA SSD (it's a Kingston ms200 60GB) and the 1TB HDD (WD10SPCX), and replace it with a 500GB 2.5" SSD (probably a Crucial MX500). TBH I want to retain the HDD, but mSATA SSDs are too expensive for the capacity they offer, and 1TB SSDs are way over my budget.
It remains to be seen whether I'll use this opportunity to jump to Windows 10 (out of necessity rather than desire).
Will still dual-boot to Linux.

Flash drives do just die sometimes. But it can be the slot / connector too. Try cleaning it and fiddling with it.
Most importantly, I hope you are well now and stay healthy.

Removed the SSD yesterday, blew air on the contacts, and put it back it. SSD got detected right away, but it disappeared after a few sleep/resume cycles.
Thanks. I feel better now, hopefully make a full recovery.

Re: mSATA SSD wonky after X220 kept docked (powered off, charger plugged in) for two weeks
The Crucial MX500 SSD arrived earlier today. Swapped out the HDD, ripped out the old mSATA SSD, then installed Windows 10.
Had to redo the installation because it wouldn't accept the Window 7 product key on the COA sticker-- turns out I forgot to add the EI.CFG file to specify that it was an OEM installation. Got that sorted out and currently typing this post on the revived X220.
Now trying to find a lightweight alternative to that monstrosity Lenovo considers as the replacement to Power Manager.
Will install Debian after I finalize how much space to allocate for the other partitions-- Windows data, Linux root, Linux swap, Linux home.

If you are using a retail version, do you have to slipstream that EI.CFG file to make it OEM?

Re: mSATA SSD wonky after X220 kept docked (powered off, charger plugged in) for two weeks
I downloaded the Windows 10 build 2004 ISO directly from Microsoft, then put in on a flash drive using Rufus. By default, it doesn't have any EI.CFG file. When I installed it in my X220, it defaulted to Retail and wouldn't accept the Win 7 product key (printed in the COA sticker) I entered after installing Windows (didn't input any during the installation process).
So I created the EI.CFG file in the SOURCES directory, with the following contents:
Code: Select all
[EditionID]
[Channel]
OEM
[VL]
0
Again, I entered the product key after installation, and this time it was accepted.

I hate Vantage myself. If only it had been a bloated Power Manager alternative, it wouldn't have been so bad (the new Power Manager is a bloated alternative to the old one, after all). . The problem is that it's a huge monolithic package that integrates everything including hard-to-turn off updates.axur-delmeria wrote: ↑Wed Jul 01, 2020 8:14 amNow trying to find a lightweight alternative to that monstrosity Lenovo considers as the replacement to Power Manager.
The question is - what functionality is it you are looking for? For many things, the built-in Power Management of Win10 may be good enough.

Charge thresholds mainly. BTW, there's still a Thinkpad hotkey program for Win 10 right? The Bluetooth indicator LED is always on, even I turn it off through that menu that shows up on the right edge of the screen.

You could install Vantage, enable the battery gauge, configure the thresholds the way you want them, then uninstall Vantage. The battery gauge will stay, and you can toggle the thresholds through it, but I don't think you can change them, and I'm not even sure it will keep your custom values (although probably will, because these should be stored in the battery circuitry to work even when the PC is off).
There is something, because most of the Fn-combinations work on my T430s, and the familiar Thinkpad OSD pop-ups appear when changing volume or toggling Caps Lock on my T430s.axur-delmeria wrote: ↑Wed Jul 01, 2020 4:58 pmBTW, there's still a Thinkpad hotkey program for Win 10 right?
The T430s does not have Bluetooth LED, but I can confirm that the behavior is consistent with what you describe. Toggling Bluetooth via the Win10 right edge menu does not turn the radio off (it still shows up on in Fn+F5 menu). When I turn it off in Fn+F5, the radio disappears, and Win10 right edge menu does not even offer a Bluetooth control option. So it looks like these are two different control layers.axur-delmeria wrote: ↑Wed Jul 01, 2020 4:58 pmThe Bluetooth indicator LED is always on, even I turn it off through that menu that shows up on the right edge of the screen.

I'll probably just use TLP on Linux to set the charge thresholds.
One question regarding SSDs: how much over-provisioning is recommended on the MX500 500GB?
This is my first time getting an SSD this big, and left no unpartitioned space in my previous ones-- it's hard to over-provision when there's only 56GB usable space.

Hi axur-delmeria!
is your X220 working well with W10/2004? I am still not being offered to upgrade from W10/1909 on my X220 tablet, and I'm not sure whether I should upgrade manually.

Haven't run into issues, though TBH I don't run Win10 daily on this machine as I primarily use Linux.
