mSATA SSD Recommendations for x220T?

#1 Post by Digitalhorizons » Mon Aug 17, 2020 11:33 am

I'm needing a extra bootable drive, I already have a 2tb firecuda in the main HDD bay, and since it's my main machine now I've nearly filled it up. Since I need to take time to organize files and I need a faster OS drive and want to multiboot my only option atm is a msata drive, looks like Dogfish and Kingston are good for reasonable prices unless you're willing to fork over nearly $400 for a samsung EVO msata ssd. I wish to multiboot linux/win10 on the msata at the very least. I have the custom mcdonnelltech bios if that makes any difference. Anyone here tried the Dogfish 500gb msata drive?

Hi.

No experience with the Dogfish here, mainly Samsung and Kingston only.

Are you specifically requiring a 2 Tb mSata or will a smaller capacity suffice?

I purchased several Samsung 860 EVO 500 Gb mSata drives last summer before they went out of production.

I slotted one in an X220T and another in an T520....both work well and are very fast, with enough extra capacity (for me!) to supplement the main SSD's in both machines. They're not quite as quick as the SATA drives, but unless you're running direct speed tests between the two, for practical purposes any observable difference is immaterial. As I'm sure you're aware, speedwise both are MILES ahead of an SSD/hard drive combo!

I can probably spare the third one if you're interested...$100 U.S.

(I THINK this one had a negligible one or two Gb of total writes on it...I remember installing as a storage drive on a regular X220, but it was only in there for a week before I sold that particular unit sans the mSata drive. It went back in the box and on the shelf.)

I also have an extra Kingston 480GB UV500 mSata drive...$85 U.S.

PM if interested only if they're large enough drives to suit your purpose.

Regards.

I heard Samsung QVO are a cheaper alternative to EVO..
I'd trust anything Samsung makes :)
Heh still £444 in the UK for 4Tb https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07KSJDDZY
And £222 for 2Tb https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07KSJF3MD
Is that good enough price?..
Otherwise maybe Anandtech.com has got some advice?.. They like talking about $$/Gb

P.S. Also, just checking, you're aware of this project right? They haven't delivered yet, will take time to deliver, resulting speed won't be great, it will be limited to short NVMe-s only of which there is preciously little on the market but if you want every last gram of storage you can cram into your X220t you might be interested
