Ericson F5521GW alternative use for the slot

Hi All,
I am curious about alternative use for the slot for this modem installed in my X220. I believe this is supposed to provide 3g mobile broadband by inserting a 3g SIM card in it.
As this has never been used and probably never will I am wondering if I could just have this removed and in this case use the slot for something more up to date and in line with our times? Is this a PCI-E type and what could I use this for in case I have this removed? Any suggestions?
Thanks

You can install a mSATA SSD, it is a fairly easy replacement and works out of the box. If you need extra storage it is a nice addition (although they are becoming more expensive as mSATA is a dying form factor). Take into account it is SATA II, not SATA III so it is slightly slower than the main 2.5" bay. I got a cheap Kingston a while ago and use it to store data in my T430 while the main bay SSD has the OSes and other stuff (I don't own a X220 but I think this mod is possible, someone correct me if I'm wrong, please).
