X200 - ThinkLight not working using Win 10 - faulty?

#1 Post by g8tzl2004 » Thu Jan 21, 2021 4:06 pm

I have recently acquired an X200 with no HDD. I have used an old HDD and installed Win 10 but only installed Windows Updates rather than installing the X200 "Thinkpad" features (like what you get from a factory install).

The webcam works OK but the ThinkLight does not work. When I press Fn PgUp I get nothing...no LED light and no indication on the screen that I have "switched on" the light. When I use the "brightness" keys (Fn Home etc), there is a screen indication of the brightness adjustment and it works OK.

Any views on whether the ThinkLight LED is dead OR do I need to install the official Lenovo driver for the X200 ThinkLight rather than relying on the built in Windows 10 Pro drivers?. Should I get some indication on the screen when I press Fn PgUp??

I don't believe you need any drivers for that to work, just hotkey drivers if you want the on screen display to show.
Try your page up key and see if that's working? If the key works, try fn+pgup in BIOS?

Thinklight LED is notoriously self destructive on x200/x201 models, it commonly breaks in the LCD cable a few inches down from the Thinklight. It can be resoldered if you're skilled or you can buy a new condition cable.

OK on the LCD flex cable issue...OK on being able to re-soldered the flex.

The PgUp /PgDn keys are working....but in BIOS, Fn PgUp does not switch on the LED light...so it must be the flex cable issue :(

Another question...the webcam next to the LED light is working OK..but it looks like the "see thru" plastic which covers the webcam still has a thin "protective" peel off in place...I can see small "bubbles" in the protective film. Is this actually a protective film which I should remove..or is it some kind of anti-glare covering...or some other kind of protection which should not be removed??

That is still the protective 'skin', just peel it off.
