X220 IPS screens gone?

#1 Post by naltar » Tue Apr 06, 2021 9:58 am

One of our x220s developed 'one of those' vertical strips. I thought it shouldn't be a problem, went to x220.mcdonnelltech.com, confirmed frus, then ebay.co.uk and then... well, I AM confused, because what's meant to be IPS panels (LP125WH2(SL)(B2), LP125WH2(SL)(B3) are being sold allright, but sellers claim - in auction titles, or auction information, that they're 'non-IPS'. So, are they, or aren't they?
btw, there's one that claims it 'is' IPS, but adding the usual gataway "LIKE LG PHILIPS", which means, in plain English, "don't blame us if we ship something else". Another seller has one that claims to be IPS, 60 gbp, with 'free returns'. To China, that is, which is a grim joke (never mind vat + tax on original purchase). Well, there's another one that claims to be IPS, but it's 71 GBP anyway. It wasn't long ago when I could have got x220 (i5) for not much more. Is it brexit knocking? Does it mean IPS panels for x220s are getting... thin?
p.s. If it was for the other x220 that my son's using, I wouldn't be bothered, because his sits on the docking station 100% of time, but the one with faulty screen is for a young lady that very much prefers lap-topping :(

n.

Just swap complete lids between the two...
And tell your son to use an external monitor.

It hasn't been in production for more than 5 years, so the answer is yes, unfortunately.

Look for a Lenovo S230U Twist (or its screen), usually they come with a touch-screen.
They use an IPS LP125WH2-SLT2 LCD where the touch part can easily be removed.
Otherwise they are a perfect drop-in for X220/X230.

Thank you very much for all the suggestions. Unfortunately, I can't afford to spend over 70 gbp on an IPS screen (current price in the UK, presumably on the way up as supplies dry up) and 'compatible' screens are a plague on ebay. Well, in this particular case, a patch-up solution (out of sight, out of mind, though irritating), was just to swap hdds between the two x220s. Not great, given the working screen is non-IPS, so colours, naturally, much poorer. When this panel goes, at some point, I can still try that trick from reddit with screen-splitting. If it fails (probably!), I can still cannibalize my x230 IPS screen, as it sits on the dock most of the time anyway. Either case, much as I love those machines, even though there's nothing even remotely close for a replacement, their future's not bright here (sourcing mildly reliable batteries is another issue).

n.
