X220 shuts down when charger is connected

I'm new here and I've recently bought a cheap X220 i7-2640m. I knew there was a problem with charging: when the battery is connected and I plug in the charger the X220 shuts down. Sometimes immediately, sometimes after 60-120 second, but usually enough to plug in the battery and then disconnecting the charger. The charger works, and I've tried other (known working) chargers and batteries as well. It doesn't happen on another X220 with the same charger/battery and it is OS independent. (same behavior in Windows 10, Ubuntu 20.10, Fedora 33). The weird thing is that after updating the BIOS from 1.40 > 1.46 this behavior stopped for a day.
I'm thinking there's a problem with the charging circuit on the mainboard and I'll probably need to replace it. But I'm posting this hoping somebody knows how to fix it without swapping mainboards?
Just as I'm typing this the X220 works with both the charger and the battery connected, and it charges the battery but every few seconds it stops charging for a second, then resume charging again.
