X200 display drop-in replacement

#1 Post by edmund77 » Sun Jul 18, 2021 2:05 am

Hi,

I want to replace the display on my x200 as it has become very dark. I am comfortable with opening and fixing thinkpads. However, researching the possible display models that I can use, I got confused. Ideally, I want a display that is a drop-in replacement, I do not want to mess with mods and having to source additional components like inverters.

So, my questions are:

- Which display model is a drop-in replacement (with no mods needed)
- Are there any drop-in replacement displays that are IPS and/or 1400x900?

Thanks in advance!

There aren’t drop in replacements on IPS for X200(or any **00 series) but there are LED ones like 42T0709(from LG) I know some guy who sell it in $87, I’ll ask him for resolution and shipping, it seems to be brand new(in Lenovo box and all that)

There are a bunch of BOE-Hydis AFFS panels (AFFS is a subtype of IPS) panels that work with the X200, they are CCFL-backlit, which means that it will only be a drop-in replacement if his X200 currently has a CCFL-backlit LCD.
Of course, these panels have been out of production for many years now and may be hard to find.
Also, the "dim screen" issue may be caused by a bad backlight, or a defective inverter. This means that there's a 50/50 chance that replacing the LCD panel won't solve the problem. :(

In general, there are 3 types of screens available for the X200:

- 1280x800, CCFL-backlit; uses CCFL cable and inverter; has AFFS (IPS equivalent) drop-in upgrade

- 1280x800, LED-backlit; uses LED cable and LED board; no AFFS drop-in upgrade

- 1440x900, LED-backlit; originally available for the X200s only, requires a completely different lid and cable; no AFFS upgrade

You can use "AFFS" as a search keyword in this particular subsection of the forum in order to find more info. I cannot provide any first-hand knowledge as I've never owned an X200.
Planned Purchase: T480s i5-8350 FHD Touch
Impulse Buy: Thinkpad not named for safety reasons

My X200s has a LED PVA display that was installed by the previous owner. I can try and find the part number for anyone interested in sourcing one as well. That being said, I was thinking about selling the X200s anyway, so let me know if there is interest.

Hello,

Be careful : the X200 has a CCFL display, and you can't replace it with a LED one. I tried, and I failed (I didn't break anything, however). In fact, I had the same display with this screen as the one I would have on a screen with absolutely no backlight.
Also, and this time I agree with you : No IPS display available for the X200. But if you search hard, you can find screens with a technology called AFFS (which is the equivalent of IPS). This display must be CCFL backlit to work on a X200.

Edmund77 : if you want a drop-in replacement, the best is to install a display with the same references. If you want to know exactly what you have, you can use HWInfo64 ("Monitor" section). You can be sure you're safe in this case.
Know that you could also buy an X201 display, it has CCFL too. I have here an X200 and and X201. I put an X201s screen on the X201. The screen of the X201 went on the X200, and I have the X200 screen for spare (I put the X201 screen on the X200 because it has a webcam on it (and it's in better shape). But the X201s screen never worked on the X200.
