X220 i7 Bios 1.46 Linux Mint. USB3.0 problem

Hi.
I landed a pair of X220 i7 with USB 3.0 ports from ebay which I've upgraded. Both are v nice but one of them has problems recognizing when a thumb drive is plugged into the USB 3.0 port. If the thumb drive is present when the computer boots up then it is recognized and mounted however if I remove the drive and plug it back in again it does not reappear. The same happens if I log out and back in again. The other two USB 2.0 ports behave as expected as do the pair, USB 3.0, I have added via the express card. The SD card slot also behaves as expected.
I'm hoping to gift these to neighbours, They are really for their children who are about to go to big school and hopefully later in life. As such I would like them to be perfect so one of them having a clunky USB 3.0 is a bit of a downer.
Has anyone seen such behaviour and found a fix for it? I'm hoping it's me being my usual dumb self and there might be an aha! moment.
Many Thanks.
