I recently received a nice X230 tablet, and it comes with an i5-3320M. I am willing to upgrading it to a quad core i7-3612/5QE. Are the regular ones compatible with the tablet? Or do I need a specific version to make it work?
Also, why is everyone getting the 3612 instead of 3615 despite less power?

There are quad core tablet motherboards. 3612qe uses less power at 35w instead of 45w.

Unfortunately,
no. X230 Tablet motherboards are different, the most noticeable difference being the location of the LCD cable connector.

Heat and power output. The 3612QE has a 35 watt TDP, same as the dual-cores. The 3615QE is 45 watts, which means it will put out more heat than the heatsink is designed to handle. Intel 3rd gen mobile CPUs can't be undervolted, so the only way to reduce heat output is to limit the max CPU clock speed, the probably end result would be that the 3615QE would get nerfed to the 3612QE's level, defeating the purpose of getting a faster processor.
