I'm glad to see, though, that it's got an optional non-SSD hard drive. I am less glad to see that Lenovo is once again not offering a discrete graphics chipset...but I won't be able to afford an X300 anyway. I'm looking forward to the X300 driving down X61 prices!

There's no way I will be able to afford it before 2010 but man that thing looks sweet.

Nitpicks: let's hope the SSD is high-performance unlike the one in Macbook Air. And the 4 GB limit for RAM is a bit low.

I dunno how anyone will afford it. It'll inevitably be priced through the roof. I was disheartened to learn that the Dell XPS M1330 can be had with a better processor, a real graphics solution, and a ridiculously comprehensive warranty at a much lower price than a comparable Thinkpad.

I've used Dell laptops and never liked their keyboards, mice, build quality, etc., but at the price it's very tempting. At $1600-ish, you can get a Core Duo, a Geforce 8400, a built-in DVD burner, and it comes bundled with Photoshop. Plus, you don't have to put up with Lenovo shipping. I need to buy a new laptop in the next few months, and even though I swore to myself I wouldn't touch a Dell with a ten-foot pole, the bang-for-the-buck factor is hard to ignore.

As much as I don't like widescreens, this machine is likely to be a winner, and I wouldn't mind owning it....

Now, the price is what we're waiting for...

I am positive that X300 will be well-loved amongst executives of all shapes and sizes...

With all due respect to everyone, I'm waiting to see prices from Lenovo themselves, and then we'll talk...I seriously doubt that any of these online retailers have seen a X300 with their own eyes yet...

can 1.2 ghz do good video conference, tv streaming, and occasional video editting?

I knew that this thing would weigh more than 2.5 lbs. So, it really starts at 2.93 lbs, for a unit without an optical drive. With an optical drive, it weighs 3.13 lbs, about the same as my HP nc2400 which also has an integrated optical drive.

Hopefully, I will be able to afford a used unit by 2012...

I'm impressed that it has a rollcage.

Like others have said, it is a little expensive for me at the moment, but it will be interesting to see what it (or the follow-on) sells for in a year.

Considering I could afford a T42p (purchased for about $450US) about 3 and a half years after it was made, your estimation is probably dead right. 2.5lb was always going to be a pipe dream...I may consider one in 2012 as well.

So it's looking more and more official by the day. I think it's great to have such a cutting edge product on the market. It is a pipe dream for many of us though, price wise.

These are prices with SSD. The slides in this thread seem to indicate that the X300 can be had with a 120GB regular drive. If the prices match up with the Macbook Air (which they may not) that's $1000 chopped off the prices listed--$2500-3000 reduced to $1500-2000. Still seems a bit much, but much more reasonable than $3k, and an SSD isn't worth $1000.

I dunno, while the specs on that machine look great, it looks a little too big for an X series subnotebook...this thing is about 3 lbs fully loaded? Whats the X61s? I don't remember quite right, but I think the package in the mail was 2.1.


Plus, it looks like a Dell, and has both a Trackpad and a Trackpoint. No one is EVER going to want both. If they had an option for a model with one, and a model with the other, that would be acceptable. Get rid of the useless ugliness (bezel) and give me a 11". Smaller if they can make a solid butterfly.

The X61s weighs 2.7 lb. This X300 is a huge improvement over all previous X-series Thinkpads because it has a 1440x900 screen. All previous models had 1024x768, which many people find virtually useless. Yes, I am aware that some X6* tablets have 1400x1050, but they weigh 3.8 lb which is too heavy for an "ultraportable". IMO, the X300 is the most exciting Thinkpad ever made.

I do. I use the touchpad most of the time but once in a while I switch to the trackpoint.

Piano wizzard... is the x300 powerful enough with only 1.2 ghz? I'm still trying to figure out if I should purchase the X300 or not. I only do office tasks -- I keep 10 windows of email, excel, outlook, work, and firefox open. BUT I also like to stream cnn video. i'm at 97% to 100& cpu usage on my pentium m 1.6 ghz 2 ram dell d600. it's driving my crazy since the video freezes up. can i get away with the x300 since i don't do any graphic intensive video editing or photo editing? thansk! (i also use skype video to chat w/ family abroad.)

a core 2 duo fixes that problem long ago. At 1.2Ghz it sounds slow but you have to cores now to do work so you shouldn't have any problem with just browsing and checking emails and all that. Watching videos should be no problem also.

Ditto - when I'm laying in bed prior to going to sleep I hardly ever find the touchpad as comfortable as the trackpoint when my T42p's resting at 45 degrees on my "lap". Otherwise I prefer the touchpad for general usage, although I happily have used several TPs without a touchpad.

lightlamp, I would think that the CPU in this machine would be more than fine. The 1.6GHz Pentium M CPU and the 1.2 Core 2 Duo LV CPU have vast differences; don't let the clock speed fool you into believing that it may be an inferior processor. You should be able to get away with the X300.

Great pictures, looks like great Thinkpad to me.

Now I realised what in terms of DESIGN was a little
bit disturbing me with T6x series. With the T6x series
the trusty curvy design elements (T4x,570) where mixed with a
new rigid, rectangular desing, e.g. at the UltraNav.
Here with the X300 there is a consistent dry and rectangular look.
Comparing it to my preferred design, it's different but, still cool.

Even so I hate wide-screens, it doesn't look to bad on the X300.
I'm keen to see the screen quality compared to to my Flexviews.
Would there be offered a classic 4:3 version of the X300?

And last but not least, I have to winge about the Windows Key
again. Hoping for an optional keyboard WITHOUT Windows Key!

yeah, i know. but without touchpad the T23 has much cleaner look than the T60.

I dont want to disable the pad. I want a palmrest that doesnt have it. Not that hard to make, is it?

Anyways, I have a feeling they will release this when the current X60 sale ends. I havent seen a end date on the sale (maybe i didnt look hard enough?) so ill assume thatll go until their current stock is down. I think I'll wait a bit on the X300, because I assume we'll have the same problem like how we did last summer when the X61* came out, and orders were shipped up to several months late. In adition to the probably over 3k price tag. Maybe they'll release an 128GB ssd in a few months, who knows?

Also, like i said above, I think some of the angles on it look dell-ish.
And I hope they dont make up pay more for XP, cause the spec sheet shows that Vista eats up power like a beast (no wonder the x60 is getting worse power than the x40) Well, when it comes out, i assume somebody on these forums will be posting their "I got the first X300" de-boxxing pics. I may consider buying another X61s, just in case the X300 is bloody ugly.

And yes, a 1024x768 4:3 12.1" would be nice.

BTW, im surprised there are guys out there that use both, sorry i misrepresented the population ^_^. As for the TrackPad people out there, does the Point get in your way? Even if its disabled? For me (I use the Point) the Pad just gets in the way and is annoying even if its disabled. Just wonderin...

In other news...hooray that they're bringing back the stripes on the mouse buttons, and hopefully we'll see a keyboard version without a win key..or at least the win key on the right (one that looks like a mouse on a page that does the same thing as right mouse click), cause shrunk Ctrl and Alt buttons are annoying. What Lenovo could do, if they INSIST on having it, is move it to somewhere like above F9 and left of PrtSc, if its like Microsoft is giving them compensation for having the key on there. As for the win key, they could make it an Fn-function, Fn+Ctrl, if the High Command insist that it stays.

As for the battery life, they said 10 hours under XP. In a real world environment, what do yall figure it to be? My X61s gets about 5-6 on an 8 cell, Vista, but I turn the screen brightness up and sometimes blare music. (Imagine that, someone blaring music on a thinkpad.)

Now I hope for an X100 (11" - at least 1366x768) or an X70 12" 1400x1050. 13.3" is too big for an ultraportable machine. It is almost the same width as regular 14" models. Folding it into T series would be probably more suitable. But I agree it is the most interesting model lately.

Yeah, I also want to see it wrapped as a T series, but if they were to do that, they might want to add a few T type features, such as ded graphics.

And stick to the [letter][family][model](letter) system. like X70 or someat...anyways, we'll see in a few months.

I really hope for an X70 ... lets wait

can this drive an external moniter? Up to what resolution?
