I personally don't think so, but I have nothing to back it up with except some casual observations which may or may not be correct.

The slides that were posted made numerous references to a HDD version.

The businessweek article makes reference to a refresh in August.

It appears to me that a HDD is definitely being planned upon and that it will likely be available in August at the latest.

Even if it were not available in August (which I agree it will be), it seems to me that resellers might include a HDD for some clients to reduce purchase outlay. The SSD's are very expensive, it makes sense that Lenovo would make a HDD version to cater to the thrifty crowd, which (lets face it) represents a good portion of their business.

In the slides were references to hard drives and hard drive protection.

In addition, some references on web sites went to Samsung.
Go to Samsung and you find the new 1.8" 120GB drive with 5400 rpm (halleluja!).
That should be way faster than the old X40 drives, and definitely cheaper than SSDs.

Actually, Dell is using those new 1.8" drives already...

I can't wait for the HDD version to be released. Being budget concious I can't afford to buy the SSD version now and in a year or two see the price of SSD's halved, it'd be depressing! :)

a 120GB 5400RPM 1.8" micro-SATA HDD will eventually be available.

more info can be found in this thread where i referenced the X300's hardware maintenance manual for definitive evidence.

In this review: http://www.pcpro.co.uk/reviews/170232/ PCPro are saying April will see X300s with HDD's released:
Clearly, for a lot of people that's not enough, and if you do need more space then hang on until April when Lenovo will be releasing a new batch of X300s with SATA hard disks inside.

This jives with what our CDW guy told me (claims he heard it from their Lenovo rep - how's that for third-hand info).
