Can you swap bay devices?

#1 Post by JonathanGennick » Tue Feb 26, 2008 9:16 am

It's interesting to me that one must choose up front whether one wants a DVD drive or a battery in the bay. Is that choice then forever? Or is it possible to buy both a battery and a DVD drive, and to swap them in and out as needed?

i just looked at the X300 HMM and the keyboard must be removed to access a release clip securing the optical drive.   therefore, while the bay device is removable, there are no provisions to do it on-the-fly like you can with other thinkpad models.

edit: updated post and fixed typo

Does the bay battery's power get used up before the main battery still? Major flaw.

On my X300 the DVD will pull out once one screw that also holds the keyboard in has been removed. There are two screws total to remove the keyboard.

What's the justification for not allowing on-the-fly bay swaps, I wonder?

Weight and space savings. Not using a release/ejection mechanism saves both.

Thanks for the good info. I can live without on-the-fly switching. What had bothered me was the prospect of making an irrevocable choice when making my initial purchase. So long as I can buy a battery-model first and swap in a DVD drive down the road, or vice-versa, I'm content.

It's probably all moot anyway. No matter how I look at things, the fundage doesn't seem to be there. I am leaning heavily towards a T61 instead.
