64Gb 1.8" SSD = deal breaker

i love my x61s with my Hitachi 200gb 7200RPM drive.
I was extremely disappointed to see that the on the X300 you can only put 1.8" drives. 64gb SSD is just not enough for me since I also run VMWare. And there are no speedy options for an 1.8" drive, they are all lame. Nothing beats the Hitachi 200gb drive. I even saw a review somewhere, though can't find where exactly, in which there was hardly any difference between an SSD drive an the Hitachi drive, which seems awkard, but they included all sorts of benchmarks which showed it. [censored], guess i would have to wait for an X600 or something or wait when 128GB SSD are reasonably priced.

The reviews/bencmarks on this forum seem show the SSD as stomping regular HDs. Do a search -- well it's actually on this very page of topics.
And I'm sure they'd come out with 128GB eventually, probably a year from now.

Sounds like the X300 is not the laptop for your particular application, then...?

I hopped over to the Toshiba site and they sell 1.8 inch drives in 80/120 gig sizes and 5400 rpm.
Maybe that is what you would like plug into your X300. I think they will fit...others here may know better than me.

I plan on upgrading to 128 when they become available, I just wish i could get an order placed with wwan and gps. I dunno when they plan on adding those options.
BTW: Whats up with the Wireless-N card not being an option either? I hope someone gets one of these units quick and can determine whether the card slots and antennas are installed.

All of the X300's come with Wireless-N.
It is the Intel 4965AGN card.
I think the confusion is that the website lists it as 4965AG but they left the N off the model number.
I was briefly confused until I checked to verify that the only 4965 that Intel makes is the 4965AGN.
TABOOK lists it as the 4965AGN card.

the HMM lists two 4965AGN cards, one of which with N disabled. no atheros cards are listed however.

I'm confused about this too. I'd thought the same as aamsel when I'd ordered a CTO model.
But as erik said I also just noticed Lenovo's announcement pages (for
6478/6476 and
6477) show two different options:
Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965AG
Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN
(and no Atheros)...
I'm going to cancel my CTO order

Well, you are obviously right, and I am wrong.
Apparently Lenovo knew exactly what they were doing by listing it without the "N" in the model number. There are like two references to AG (without the N) on Intel's site without going into any detail of what they are, but it would now appear to be obvious.
If this is the case, then an X300 shipping now would have 3 antennas for 2 wireless protocols.
This is now all off-topic (sorry), but...
Do we know which, if any configurations of the X300 which ship with Wireless-N right now?

I carry around a 250GB WD USB drive which is quite small and slick. It is there that I put my big files. So the 64GB drive is OK for me.
As for 802.11N WiFi, I hope there is a way to turn it off in software. Also note that the 802.11n isn't yet a complete standard. It is possible (although a bit unlikely) that the IEEE could make more changes to the standard before it is finished and then you would require a software or hardware upgrade to interoperate with other 802.11n AP's.

This week Samsung and toshiba announced high-speed 5400rpm drives. I assume these are the ones who will come into the X300 HDD version as listed in their documentation.
I suggest waiting for a few weeks then get the HDD version.
In about 6 months you could probably switch to 128GB SSD versions when they have cheaply entered the market.
It takes a while to ramp up production of SSD drives. Their prices are still somewhat esoteric at the moment.

For the sheer pricing reasons (64Gb is more than enough, given that this would be an "all-rounder" for me, and NOT the main machine) I'd like to see these offered with a standard SATA 7200 HDD...but it doesn't look like it's going to happen, not the way I see it anyway.
Oh well...may I be wrong...wouldn't be the first time...

Why?
BTW, I can disable N on my 4965 through the windows config.

In case it causes interoperability problems with older AP's or in complex WiFi areas. Thanks for confirming that it can be turned off.

I guess i will wait for the 128gb SSD option, or go with 64Gb and then switch to 128 when that becomes available. By the way , every place I looked showed the CPU as a low voltage 1.2Ghz
Isn't that kinda too slow to purchase for a brand new 2008 laptop for this price, now that X61 are running with 2.2Ghz cpus and even old x61s will do 1.6ghz ?

it's certainly not too slow to run business applications while on the road -- which is exactly what the X300 is designed to do. 64GB is more than enough to install an OS and full suite of business apps with plenty of room left over for files.
let's not forget that this isn't a T-series or T-series replacement.

You said it, ONE SSD, probably the Transcend or the SuperTalent, which are lame (well, the last ones in SLC are better, but that not it yet).
When you'll get 100MB/s reading and 60MB/s writing with a regular laptop HDD, I'd like to buy one of those.

Heard from a Lenovo rep that HDD versions (hopefully 5400RPM) could show up in a month or so. Just offering the SSD version initially is certainly the smart way to go - more money from the early adopters and it gives them a little time to ramp. Once they're offering these at a sub-2K price-point I imagine the demand will really take off.
