USB ports powered during sleep on AC

#1 Post by laughingtonto » Sat Mar 29, 2008 4:16 pm

Playing around in the BIOS, I noticed there's an option to have the USB ports powered while the unit is sleeping and on AC power. Handy for those of us who travel alot to be able to charge our USB devices without having to leave the computer on overnite.

correct.   i believe this feature debuted a few years ago on the T60 and has been standard-issue on thinkpads since.

This feature is also avaliable under

Power Manager
Global Power Settings
Check box Always on USB

Note this does not work for any Docking Station USB ports

in that case it must have been introduced on the T61.   i thought it was an option on my girlfriend's T60p but could be mistaken.

while i'm not sure about the option in the BIOS, i can put my T60 to sleep and charge my phone with it still. That is, the phone has to be plugged in before it sleeps.

That tho i think is a Windows Vista feature called USB Selective Suspend or something. It's an option in the Advanced Power Options. I'm sure XP has something similar and i think you can do it on just about any machine too.. just go into the device manager and uncheck the option under Power Management to put the USB device to sleep to save power.
